The Best Holiday Break Ever
By: Arlet Schmidt
CHAPTER FIVE
"And this kid is like, freakin’ out, right? I’m all telling him it’s going to be OK if he would just blow it out but he’s screaming all over the room with his arms flaring everywhere." Shawn said very animatedly as he imitated the kid by throwing his hands up in the air. Carrie, Michelle, Sarah and Kim were laughing so hard that they all had to hold onto something to brace themselves. "And then Philip, another student of mine looks at me, shrugs, then walks over to Jack, grabs him by the shoulders, slaps him across the face and says, ‘Get a hold of yourself man! It’s just a bloody fire from a bloody experiment!’" Shawn told them with a perfect British accent.

"Oh my God! That is so funny! What’s you do?" Sarah asked between her laughter.

"I just stood there, watching. It was the funniest thing ever. I’ve never seen anything like that during all the years I’ve been teaching."

"Ooh, that was great. We certainly miss your stories, Harris." Michelle said, falling all the way back into the huge couch.

"It would be great if Arlet was here."

"Yeah, she would of loved to hear this story. Too bad she got sick. Arlet always seem to get something around this time of the year." Her friends nodded in agreement.

"Man! I wanted to see her and see how’s she’s doing." Said another friend of theirs, Deven.

"If we knew you were going to be here, I think Arlet would of came even if she is sick. She’s going to be so mad when she finds out you, Lance, Kate and Lyndsey were here."

"So, how’s your Backstreet Boys hunt coming along?" Shawn asked, smirking. "You guys are still fans, right?"

"Oh yeah! You better believe it!" Carrie exclaimed.

"Well, we’re getting closer to them. We had third row seats at their concert in Phoenix last month." Michelle chimed in.

"Well, well, well. You are getting closer. But you still need to find a way to meet them, like backstage or something. Front row seats can only bring you so close to them." Shawn responded matter-of-factly.

"We’ll find a way. You know we always seem to find somehow to get our way." Sarah said evilly.

"Security guards beware, Sarah and her friends are coming!" Lance said as everyone laughed.

"So, if you guys could have 1 wish come true this Christmas, what would it be?" Asked Kate. She was another friend of the girls.

"Um, for me, probably a new snowboard for all this beautiful snow. There’s going to be some kick ass powder in those mountains." Shawn told them with his eyes twinkling.

"I would wish that everyone on my basketball team would get some basketball skills so we could actually win 1 game." Deven’s girlfriend Lyndsey said. They’d been going out since they were Freshman in High School. "You and Arlet should of went to my school." She said to Sarah.

"Yeah but we probably wouldn’t have much time for it. We’re already have busy schedules that we don’t even have time to play at home." Sarah replied.

"For me, I would love to hang out with you guys. You know, on Christmas morning, head to somebody’s house, open gifts and have a huge feast." Kate said.

"You know, that’s not a bad idea. We should do that." Kim responded, thoughtfully. "We could do it at our house since we probably have the most room. This is our first Christmas on our own, why not celebrate it with a bunch of friends."

"Yeah, we should. You guys like the idea? Christmas morning, come to our house, open gifts and have a huge dinner that night. You guys up for it?" Michelle asked looking around.

"I’m up for it. You up for it?" Deven asked Lyndsey.

"Yeah, I’m up for it."

Everyone nodded. "Great! Arlet will be thrilled." Sarah said.

"Do you think we should check up on her?" Carrie asked.

"No, I think she’s fine. I’m pretty sure she’s sleeping. I wouldn’t wanna wake her."

"So, what do you guys wish for this Christmas?" Lance asked looking at them.

Carrie, Michelle, Kim and Sarah looked at each other and smiled.

"Backstreet." They replied in unison.

Everyone rolled their eyes in response at them.

"Woa! Look outside guys!" Lance exclaimed looking out a nearby window. "Looks like we’re gonna have a sleep over here Shawn."

"I guess so. It would be impossible for you guys to drive home in that." Shawn told them.

"You don’t mind?" Sarah asked.

"No totally! I probably wouldn’t let you drive out there anyway. I’ll get some pillows and blankets and we’ll camp out here."

"Cool, thanks Harris. I’m not going to call Arlet and bother her. I’m pretty sure she’ll understand."

"Yeah, that might be a good idea."

Shawn ran out of his living room and came back a few minutes later with his arms full of pillows and blankets. After he passed them out to everyone, the 8 of them threw their covers over themselves, said good-night and fell asleep, dreaming about their perfect Christmas ahead of them.
