The Fryatt Valley is a three or four day trip. It is not spectacular 'tho I cannot speak about the upper valley which I have not hiked to date. Still, this is a pleasant mountain hike with a well defined trail and back country campsites and many pleasant moments with a few outstanding views. (I returned to the Fyatt Valley in July, 2000 and hiked into the Upper Valley. It is wonderful.)

The trail begins by traveling south along the west side of the Athabasca River. The Icefields Parkway (Banff to Jasper highway) is across the river. A car can be seen left of centre in the photo. This spot is the location of an old cable car crossing. It isn't a sunny day but pleasant for hiking. |

Great sandstone cliffs below me at about 8 kms into the trail. Still close to the parkway between Banff and Jasper. The parkway is on the left in the bottom of the valley and not visible from this distance. This picture is looking south down the valley toward the Columbia Icefields and Banff. At this point the trail turns west into the Fryatt Valley away from the highway and civilization.

Bridge at the Lower Fryatt Campground. This is 11.5 km in from the trailhead. Tomorrow's day starts by crossing the bridge and heading upstream along Fryatt Creek.
