August 26, 2003 - Tuesday

Last week I got a pretty nice surprise which not only made me feel like I’m making a difference in the world, but which also helped clarify a few things in this mind of mine.  I had gone on a business trip to northern Pennsylvania a few weeks ago with two coworkers. This trip lasted a few days, in which time all of us grew closer and learned more about each other.  Yes, I got questions about the scarf, dating, drinking, halaal meat, and the list goes on…

As I explained the 3 differences between halaal, zabiha meat and regular meat (way meat is cut so animal experiences least amount of pain, all blood drainage, and prayer said on meat while butchering), I noticed one of my coworkers become extremely interested in the subject matter.  I didn’t think much of it at the time, but the week after, she came up to me and told me that she was interested in eating halaal meat for the rest of her life.  She said that she had always had issues with eating meat because of the cruelty to animals and the thought of how they were butchered, etc.  She said that she would feel a lot more comfortable eating halaal meat, so InshaAllah, in the next few weeks we (my sis, coworker, another coworker who is also interested, and I) are gonna take a trip up to good ‘ol Indus Food to get ourselves halaal meat.  Hearing my coworker rave about halaal meat just made my entire day =)  I was so genuinely happy in my heart.  I felt like I had made a small difference in my corner of the world.  Hearing her talk about it also made me reconsider my vegetarian tendencies.  I thought to myself that God has created a humane way of slaughtering animals… why is that?  God is looking out for animals too… Halaal indeed does mean halaal (permissible). A thought that makes you go hmmmm….
