September 5, 2003 - Friday My turtles are getting bigger, and it's only been one measly month! I don't want them to grow up... at least not this fast. =( This past week has been pretty hectic with the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) Convention and work, but I've enjoyed it. ISNA was over Labor Day Weekend, so it was supposed to be over 4 nice long days, but they ended up passing us by very quickly. I don't want to write my thoughts about the convention in here - they are all in my non-online journal =) Work has been interesting this week as well. Yesterday I went out to Hart-Miller Island, which is about a 30 minute car ride and 15 minute boat ride. It was rainy all day yesterday so we got wet and muddy. It was my first time wearing my steel-toed boots, so that was an experience all in itself. It takes a little bit of time to get used to the boots, but once you're used to them you are fine. Anyways, Hart-Miller is an island the Corps if environmentally restoring (as well as using it to put dredged material from Baltimore harbor's anchorages and channels). Usually during dredging operations, pieces of timber and metal, chunks of concrete, tires and other debris are occasionally brought up from the harbor floor. Guess what I saw and held?? World War II vintage ordnance items!!! These materials have recently started to come up with the dredged material from our very own harbor! Some have already been used as ordnance, but others still need to be detonated - which is partly what we are doing at Hart-Miller currently. Pretty cool stuff, eh? Point of concern: I'm giving in to the dark side at work... I drank one cup of coffee and one cup of tea this week at work, and the week only consisted of 4 days. I am only 22... I can't get hooked on coffee this early!!! |
