World War I Letters
The Boy...The Family
torn by
Loneliness, Duty and Love of Country

(The original letters are fragile and some of the words may be smudged, torn or otherwise unreadable. There may have been other letters, but these are the only ones we  have).

The following are letters from Hart Stephen Corley to his parents, Silas O'Neal Corley and Harriet Elizabeth Hovis Corley. He was born July 8, 1895 (died July 10, 1961).  He was inducted into the U. S. Army, September 4, 1917, at Carrolton, Mississippi.  He sailed from the U. S. on June 12, 1918 headed for France.  He was in the Battle at Vesle River, August 7, 1918; Battle of Marne, September 15,1918;  Battle of Chautau-Theiry, September 25, 1918; Battle of Argonne Forest, September 25, 1918.  He was wounded October 9, 1918 in the Battle of Argonne Forest.

All the letters should be read to see the transition from lonely, homesick boy to an
American soldier.
