The Idea of MASH began in a small hospital in Waterville, Maine by a doctor named Dr. Richard Hornberger. He came up with the thought of writing a book about his experiences in Korea in his years at the 8055 Mobile Army Surgical Hospital or more simply known as MASH, and he did all this thinking while waiting for patients one day in his office.
