Mutant League 2006
I've been reading comics since 1984.  I started when one of my friends sold me Uncanny X-Men #197 and Secret Wars II #5.  Though I had loved superhero cartoons and shows on television since I was a kid, I had never read a comic book before.  But from there I was hooked.  I've read a variety of books over the years, and regardless of nay sayers, I continue to enjoy the standard superhero books.  I'm a True Believer, though I've delved more and more into the DC realm over the past few years.

I could go on all day about the history of comics, the useless trivia, the greatest characters, and the most memorable storylines, but every reader enjoys such a vast array of different aspects of comics, that it's virtually impossible to appeal to all comic fans.  I tend to not
Secret Wars II #5
Uncanny X-Men #197
consider myself a collector, as I don't "collect" comics, I read them.  I'm not at all interested in the value of a book, or the grade a book might have.  All I care is that the story is good and the art is good.  I'm happy to say that I'm almost always satisfied.

I've never been able to narrow my "favorites" down to one.  I consider the Avengers my favorite book of all time, surprisingly, since I've spent the majority of my reading on the plethora of X-books published over the years, though by no means do I dislike the X-books.

In fact, I consider myself a staunch defender of those who hate the convoluted plots and the endless characters created for the books.  I happen to love the richness offered by
Marvel's X-books.  Dark Phoenix?  Executioner's Song?  The Magneto War?  The X-Men, including X-Force, X-Factor, Generation X, Excalibur, and the New Mutants, as well as the various solo books (Wolverine, Cable, X-Man, Gambit, Bishop, etc.) have consistently been great reads.  I mean, Chris Claremont is a god!  But there's something about the Avengers... and I'm going way back before Busiek's run, which I do consider the best ever.  The characters, the grand stories...they're classic.  Wasp, Iron Man, Thor, Ant Man, and the Hulk.  The Avengers began with great characters, and have continued to deliver stories to match for nearly forty years.

Anyway, if I had to pick some favorite characters, I'd throw in the following: Captain America, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Photon, Emma Frost, Mystique, Henry Pym, Colossus, Moonstar, all of Alpha Flight, Hawkeye, Sunfire, Moonknight, Cloak & Dagger, and...never mind, see what I mean?  The list would be endless.

So, feel free to peruse my
comic inventory (.xls).  I doubt I'll ever stop reading, and I know I'll never sell my library, but I strongly recommend bringing friends, young and old, into your nearest comic specialty store.  It could open a whole new world of imagination, art, reading, and adventure.
