ive been thinking a lot about this whole epidemic of new-age filipino activist movies: (here are the two most "successful" ones) "the debut" - a movie about the struggling filipino entity, going for cheap laughs by using the overused filipino fob, and an inconclusive ending that leaves the audience asking, "what the hell was the point of this fucking movie?" it was a nice tale using all 157 basco brothers, but honestly, who watched this movie besides filipinos? my friend angelic made a point saying that only filipinos watch these movies and its about shit that we already know about. overall review: "the debut" was a good pcn script. "the flipside" - a movie about the struggling filpino entity, going for cheap laughs by using the overused filipino fob, and a redundant history lesson that leaves the audience asking, "what the hell was the point of this fucking movie?" it was a nice tale using the city of cerritos, bad actors from uci, and an ugly ass white dude, but honestly who watched this movie besides filipinos? my friend angelic made a point saying that only filipinos watch these movies and its about shit that we already know about. overall review: "the flipside" was a good after school special. advice to anyone wanting to make a racially-biased movie that was as successful as "my big phatty greek wedding": make your topic universal aka make your topic white aka dumb down your topic aka sell out to hollywood sell out to hollywood? why would we, as artists and as filipinos, want to do that you ask? well... if you want hollywood to know that we're here, then other people besides filipinos are gonna have to watch this shit.
