Remember what moved you recently.
Aren't you bored by predictable art or entertainment?
A film advertisement on TV exaggeratedly
shows several scenes and tells us nearly everything about the
film. And when you go to the film, you will see some 'moving'
scenes exactly the same as the ad you have already seen. A travel
guidebook has the same role. It kindly introduces where 'amazing
spots' are. And we experience them vicariously following the
writers of the book. It is just like somebody guarantees satisfaction.
But, do we really have a deep impression from them? In my experience,
the answer is 'Not really'. You might be more moved when you
come across a furniture sale in The Warehouse, than when you
enjoy a 30-dollar concert.
Then what kind of art or entertainment
can satisfy us? It may be like a treasure box discovered on the
way of exploration. It is an unknown, sudden discovery. Neither
prepared by someone nor predictable, but it is a superior creation
which stimulate your brain comfortably.
When I was living in Japan, I
used to go to watch independent films at the centre of Tokyo,
which takes one and half hours by train from my house. I prefer
an unheralded film which none of my friends would try, rather
than a stereotyped film taking a populist line. My curiosity
and thirst for something 'new' simply drive me to do so.
Our magazine, Melange is also
an 'unknown' small world, in a sense. Of course it is entirely
up to you whether you find it treasure or trash. Satisfaction
or a deep impression is not guaranteed. However, if you have
curiosity, why don't try to find words that might touch you in
our world of literature?
