MLK as a Servant Leader
part 1 of 3
In many publications Martin Luther King is described as a servant leader. Even without narrower definition anyone can belief that. In my approach to characterize his leadership I looked at him and his life with regard to the ten characteristics of servant leaders. These ten characteristics have become very well accepted for the characterization of servant leaders. In my opinion they also apply a great common base everybody can work off. The reader might want to keep in mind that not all characteristics have to apply in order to make one a servant leader. If a majority of these characteristics apply, someone may exhibit significant amount of servant leadership.

MLK was a great
listener. He is described in many texts as somebody who listens and analyses but may not be easy to convince.  He spent a geat amount of time reflecting on what he gathered from listening to other people. Howver, it might have taken along time before he acknowledged his own opinion.

He also showed great
empathy to other people. He recognized all of mankind for the individuals they were. He did not distinguish between races or ethnic group. His basic message was always that all changes that might come for the Negroes can only come if it involves and incorporates all races and ethnic groups. Here he showed great foresight for the development of situations he had to deal with, including the prediction of his own death. Unfortunately he also predicted that the goal he was working towards, was a long time away. Since his death the civil rights movement has had success in much smaller increments.
