To characterize MLK according to Situational Leadership Theory is not very easy. Most literature refers to him either as a charismatic leader or a servant leader. Analyzing MLK’s followers we can assume that most of them were either unable but willing (R3) or able but unwilling (R2) in their characterization as followers. R3 followers might be willing to follow him but are unable to do so because of social restraints like family or simple fear. The way Martin Luther motivated such followers was imply by being a participative leader. He was right there at the front line and participated himself in all actions. He went to jail numerous times. He never ask anybody to do anything what he would not do. For the followers characterized as able but unwilling he was a great sales person. He knew how to convince people and sell his idea, partly through his participative leader style. Because of his own convictions it was hard to not belief him. One of the best examples of his selling leadership style can be found when he saw his non-violent movement challenged by more militant groups. Many of his critics and even some of his followers seemed to not trust his ability to control this movement. Even so he could never convince all people of non violent protest he helped very much to keep the militant movement to a low success rate. |
