SERVANT LEADERSHIP THEORY
Jack Welch
As stated in the web page on Robert Greenleaf, there are ten characteristics that are critical to the development of servant leaders that serve to communicate the power and promise this theory offers.  These include listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building community. (Hutcheson p. 1-2)
Jack Welch believed that servant leadership could help firms thrive.  He believed the centralized command and control style of management, the autocratic leadership--the foundation of so many organizations--is dead.  His leadership ideal encompasses a wide range of qualities closely associated with a learning organization, which ideas and intellect preside over tradition and hierarchy. (Krames p. 33; 125)
Welch wanted GE to become team driven and a team leadership organization.  His model replaces “bosses” with a network of leaders and leadership teams.  Leadership may flow from one project, to another and then on to the next opportunity.  However, he believed teams still required leaders. (Slater p. 29-30)
This labor pool seeks leadership that develops worker self-esteem and self-confidence while fostering co-operation, creativity and free speech.  Welch wants work where candid openness is encouraged-including disagreement with the leadership without fear of sanction. (Hutcheson p. 1)
