LEADERSHIP THEORY ANALYSIS--page 1 of 3 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Jack Welch's leadership style that he adopts affects the manner in which he deals with dilemmas and, in turn, the nature of the decision-making process. It has been argued that leadership style often results from those behaviors that were useful in securing the leader’s first success; these actions become reinforced across time as the leader relies on them to achieve the second, third, etc. successes. By leadership style is meant the ways in which leaders relate to those around them, whether constituents, advisors, or other leaders-how they structure interactions and the norms, rules and principles they use to guide such interactions. Change has been such an ever present situation in western businesses over the past 20 years, there has been a lot of research into the effect that a CEO has on the direction and speed of change. One of the outflows of this has been research into the personality/magnetism of the leader--charisma has become a major focus of research. Jack Welch has been one of the charismatic leaders that have been held up as an example as an effective change leader. (Tilley p. 1) A leader such as Jack Welch, is an example of a productive narcissist. He is a gifted and creative strategist who sees the big picture and finds meaning in the risky challenge of changing the world and leaving behind a legacy. He has the audacity to push through the massive transformations that society periodically undertakes. Productive narcissists are not only risk takers willing to get the job done but also charmers who can convert the masses with their rhetoric.
