The Anime
Most people say the Fushigi Yuugi manga and the anime are just the same, though I do admit that the anime follows the manga VERY closely, but there's some parts that are changed or cut out from the manga to save time in the anime, I admit it's tough as an animator to decide what to keep and what to cut out but there are some little parts in the manga that help us understand the storyline and understand the characters better which are cut out in the anime. Though these small parts aren't that important, I don't like how the animators make the viewers assume that this happened without actually showing what happened just the outcome. But I admit this anime does follow the manga much more closer than series such as Ayashi no Ceres and Cardcaptor Sakura and in both cases I preferred the manga.
But overall I think the manga is better because the story is more thorough and the art is always good while sometimes animators get lazy and draw kinda ugly, remember episode.26? which was one of the worst episodes drawn in the FY anime. Yeah yeah I know it's hard to draw frame to frame so I can't expect the art to keep up with the manga but STILL if you see that episode you will understand what I mean.
Though I prefer the manga, I don't recommend people who don't know Japanese or are learning Japanese to buy the manga and not buy the anime cause though I like the manga more I watched the anime because it's hard to understand some parts when you know only bits of Japanese and you shouldn't depend on translations you'll just go crazy from looking back and forth from the book to the translations and vice versa, while the anime is translated word for word and it's easy to read the subtitles while watching the anime and understanding what's going on.
