Alternative Energy Sources
What's it about?
-Simply put, we as humans have been using fossile-fuels for far too long.  In order to become productive and responsible habitants of this planet, it is critical to harnass some of the alternative energy sources this planet has to offer and cut our dependency of fossile fuels.
Geothermal energy is another safe reliable alternative energy. www.wikipedia.org
Hydroelectric energy produced from dams can power entier cities. www.wikipedia.org
Why is it considered a problem?
-The world, not just America, is literally addicted to old technology.  Specifically, the world si addicted to fossile fuels, such as oil and coal.  The process of combusting dead organisms to make energy is effected, but is also very harmful to the enviornment.  Compared to other alternative energies, burning fossile fuels is really just a waste.  Burning fossile fuels creates releases harmul greenhouse gases into the air, increasing global warming.  Also, acid rain can form due to air pollution.  Overall, fossile fuels are a thing of the past and new renewable alternative energies are the way of the future.
Pros and Cons list for alternative energy
Pro(s)
-Most are renewable
-Little harm to the enviornment
-fuel emissions much less than gasoline/other fossile fuels
-inexpensive
-miles per gallon(mpg) would increase dramatically.  Some estimates say that by 2100, mpg could be over 150.
Con(s)
-many types of alternaitve energy are still in the experimental stage
-Public is addicted to fossile fuels, and are skeptical about new "futuristic" fuels
-Although almost all are very cheap, creating the units to harnass these alternative enrgy sources coud be very expensive i.e. a dam or nuclear power plant.
A few types of alternative energy sources include:
-Geothermal energy
-Tidal energy
-Wave energy
-Solar Energy
-Biomass
-Wind energy
-nuclear energy
-hydrogen fuel
-hydroelectric energy
Nuclear power, even with its dangerous side effects, could possibly be the next great energy souce. www.wikipedia.org
What can Consumers do?
-As consumers, we need to be as efficient as possible.  Purchase low emmisions cars, like the Toyota Synergy Drive system which uses nearly 85% electricity. Any hybrid car is great for the enviornment. Not only is this helpful to teh envionment, but it also saves you the consumer alot of money of gas.  Ethanol, solar, and electric hybrid cars get double, sometimes triple the gas milage of old gasoline powered automobiles.
Corn, just like the kind grown here in ohio, can be used as an altrnative energy. Ethanol or "green gas" will be a huge in the automotive industry withen the next few years. www.wikipedia.org
What is the government doing?
-Billions of dollars annually is being spent around the world on fixing our dependency on fossile fuels.  Coal and oil are a thing of the past, and the United States is leading the way with developing large scale alternative energy.  In Brazil 75% of all energy used comes from ecological ethanol created from sugar cane.
Final thought!
-I really enjoyed reseaching this topic.  Fossile fuel is siply an old, dead, and dangerous energy source.  I personally would love to be on a research team sometime and help develope some new form of engery, or create a 400 horsepower car that gets 200 mpg.  This may seem far fetched, but the technology is out there. Alternative energy is definately going to be huge in the next century, and a vital part of our human survival.
