What is biodiversity? -Biodiversity really means exactly how it sounds. It is the amount of different kinds of organisms living in the same ecosystem. Humans need biodiversity for many reasons, such as medicines and raw materials. |

Why is it considered a problem? -Because of humans, many animals are suffering terribly, some to the point of extinction. One good example of this is humans need for lumber. Deforestation is ruining the biodiversity of all the animals who lived in the rainforests because it happens too quickly for the animals to adapt. (www.lawerencehallofscience.com). Deforestation isn't the only way humans are destroying biodiversity. Household cleaners and toxins that are sprayed into the air, over time, can |

Antartica, one of the coldest places on earth, has a very low amount of biodiversity. www.wikipedia.com | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Pros and cons of losing biodiverity There really are no pros to losing biodiversity, so here's a list of the cons. CONS: -animals become extinct -loss of medicines -entire ecosystems destroyed -businesses can suffer dramatically -economy decreases due to lack of business -biodiversity affects humans, and destroying it only hurts our way of life |

What is the government doing? -The government is actually doing alot to stop teh rampid loss of biodiversity. Laws are passed every year restricting fishermen from fishing the same places so that the fish being caught can reproduce. In South America, it is illegal to cut down a single tree without going through a lengthy legal system, and poaching is being banned worldwide so animals like the silverback gorilla, black rhino, and many types of alligators will not become extinct. Also, governments in most developed nations strictly adhere to a no tolerence policy when it comes to getting rid of toxic wastes in the ocean. (www.biodiversity911.org). |

So just how diverse is our planet? -950,000 species of insects -270,000 types of plants -19,000 species of fish -10,500 different kinds of reptiles/amphibians -9,000 species of birds -4,000 different kinds of mammals (www.biodiversity911.org) |

What can consumers do? -Consumers can do alot to raise awareness for the loss of biodiversity. Petitioning is a great way to get the government involved if you think there is a problem with the way a company is treating a rainforest, fisheries, or the atmosphere. Also, when going on a vacation, do not buy souveniers that come from endangered animals such as ivory from elephants. Buying these items only causes illegal poaching to happen more often. This same rule goes for any item made from an endangered animal, such as snake skin boots, crocodile purses, and coral jewelery. (www.biodiversity911.org) |

My opinion -After researching biodiversity and how important it is for humanity, i believe that the affects of destroying biodiversity on a large scale can only harm humans themselves. We as humans only benifit from the plants and animals around us, and when we poach, over fish, and pollute our ecosystems we are only hurting ourselves. Although humans are the major problem when it comes to the loss of biodiversity, it is also up to us to become the solution. |
