To post to our mailing list you must first become a member. To become a member, you must submit a character. Characters will be looked over by the founder, who will then decide whether or not to accept them. If your character is accepted, you will be invited into the mailing list. All player characters need to be submitted and approved before they can be used, regardless of whether or not the player is already a member.

Before submitting a request to become a member, you must read through our rules and FAQs.

We like dynamic, interesting, well fleshed-out characters. A good way to help yourself along when making one is to use a character creation worksheet. This is a good one, and although it's not related to Pern, a great deal of it is still just as applicable.

Character Worksheet

Character guidelines are as follows:

Don't submit unusually powerful characters. Remember, dragonriders are still only human. They don't have any special abilities.

Don't submit characters owned by anyone other than yourself, unless you have permission. Likewise, don't submit characters based on people in books, movies, t.v. shows, etc.

Do remember to add details. The more interesting and complex a character is, the more likely we are to accept it. We aren't interested in 3 line descriptions of a character's personality or background. Be creative, be original, and make sure to flesh out your characters so they are more than just 2-dimensional archetypes.

Do avoid perfection. If you want your character to be interesting, they need layers. No person on Pern is entirely good, entirely evil (I don't even like to use those words), or entirely perfect. If your character is very skilled at one thing, maybe they'd be pretty bad at something else, or have some personality flaw that makes nobody like them. It's by no means an exact science. Just remember to keep the character human.

You can submit a player character either for Mirror Lake Weyr or Lyra Cove Hold. All other locations may contain only NPCs.

Currently no characters from other time periods are allowed, as timed transfers are unknown to the riders at this time.

Remember that the founder reserves the right to approve or reject any character for any reason, but if you follow the above suggestions, you're much more likely to have your character approved.

Rankers:

If you want to play a ranking character, keep in mind that it may not be accepted, even if the character concept is a good one. Approval of ranking characters is based upon position availability, player demand, how many rankers a player already owns and whether or not we think that the player can handle the responsibilities.

Ranking positions are:

Goldriders
Wingleaders
Wingseconds
Weyrlingmaster
Weyrlingmaster's Assistant
Headwoman
Master Crafters
Searchriders
Lord and Lady Holder
Other major Hold positions (such as Hold Harper)
Someone who can communicate with all dragons*

*Don't expect to get this one, as we are extremely picky with this type of character. Only one can exist in Mirror Lake at a time.

Firelizards:

Only adult dragonriders and other high ranking characters (either at the Weyr or with close ties to it) may begin with a flit. Others must receive special permission, or wait to be given an egg from one of our firelizard clutches.

If you have a character who already has a flit, you must give an explanation as to how they acquired it, and that has to be from a clutch produced at one of the Weyrs. Wild-caught flits are only allowed in special circumstances, and must receive special approval.

We reserve gold flits as rewards for people who contribute a lot to the Weyr. The only way your character can get one is if we give one to you. Please don't ask for one. If you are active and post interesting stories, or otherwise contribute to the Weyr (such as recruiting lots of new members) we will offer one of your characters a gold firelizard.

NPCs outside of the Weyr may not have flits, unless, again, BoD permission is given. Weyr NPCs may only have green or blue flits.

We highly encourage anyone who would like a flit for their character to apply for an egg from one of our clutches. It makes the process much more fun and interesting to actually go through the trouble of getting one and then discovering who hatches out of the egg. Colors are chosen randomly, so neither the owner of the clutch nor the applicant will know what they receive until after it has hatched.

NPCs:

NPCs do not need to be submitted unless they hold some important position, like Lord Holder, of which there are only a limited number. However, we encourage that you do so with major NPCs so we can have them on file for reference.

If you would like to submit a character, make sure you have read through all of the rules carefully, then copy the questions below and e-mail them to us at mirror_lake_weyr@yahoo.com. It's easiest to just paste the character into the new e-mail, but you can also send it as a file attachment.
