King's Highway 60 |
Hwy 60 is a major east-west highway that links the Muskoka and Parry Sound regions with the Ottawa Valley. In addition, it is the main highway through Algonquin Provincial Park. Hwy 60 runs from Hwy 11 in Huntsville to Hwy 17 east of Renfrew, allowing for easy access to the park from Toronto and Ottawa. Hwy 60 was not touched by the mass downloading of 1997-98. |

Highway 60 looking westbound in Algonquin Park, between Rock Lake Road and the entrance to Leaf Lake, which is in the distant background. Instead of conventional white-on-green signs, the MTO uses special yellow-on-brown signs along the King's Highways in Algonquin Park. One of these signs is faintly visible in the background. Looking underneath the Madawaska River bridge on Highway 60 in Whitney. This is an unusual arch-type bridge that is not normally found on provincial highways in Ontario. A wooden pedestrian sidewalk was attached to the south side of the bridge at some point. Photo taken 17 July 2004. |

Highway 60 looking eastbound in Whitney, from the Madawaska River bridge. In the background is the junction at Post Street. (A personal connection: The entrance at right is to the Algonquin Lunch Bar and Shell gas station, which were owned and operated by some of my family on my grandfather's side for decades, until the operations were sold in the early 1990s.) Photo taken 17 July 2004. |

Highway 60 looking westbound in Wilno, from the junction with Buchart Street. At left is the Wilno Tavern, which was formerly the Exchange Hotel, which was owned by some of my family many decades ago. This hotel had no connection with the restaurant and gas bar in Whitney, as it was owned by some of my grandmother's relatives. At right is the site of the former railway station in Wilno. Photo taken 17 July 2004. |

Looking westbound through Wilno along Highway 60, from the Wilno Station Cafe (not to be confused with the former railway station, they are not at all connected). At right is a Highway 60 shield, without a directional tab underneath. Most shield markers along this highway do not have directional tabs. Photo taken 17 July 2004. |
