Just a few hours before Nagasaki was bombed, Russia invaded Manchuria. This was a huge blow, because the Japanese had been hoping that Russia would help to negotiate a treaty, and a threat concerning the army was perceived which gave warmongers a blow.
No matter what help the devastation of Hiroshima might have been to the Allied cause, Nagasaki was superfluous. Although hit with a plutonium bomb, it was pretty much the same story and didn't add to anybody's case. |
