Present Day Significance

Dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki has left a profound effect that lasts to this day. First of all, we now have nuclear weapons and know the devastation that takes place when they are dropped. The recent Iraq war was only one of many wars that have been fought because of nuclear weapons. Also, there is a different gene pool now than there would be if the bomb hadn't been dropped. Over a hundred thousand lives were lost, over a hundred thousand people that could have had children who could have had children. If an invasion had occurred, those men's lives might have been lost, and their descendants would never have existed. The survivors and their descendants are now at high risk of getting cancer or have cancer. Children are especially prone to getting leukemia.
