Old Days, by Chicago

Chicago is not a town in which I have ever resided, but much time has been spent there, working , and visiting sites. The city was actually built upon a swamp, and in 1871 The Great Chicago Fire brought most of the city down to ruins. Over the years, the city rebuilt with great magnitude.  It also become the center of news through various times like the Worlds Fair-Columbian Exhibition, Prohibition, the Democratic National Convention, and most recently as the home of the Chicago Bulls.

There is so much to see and do in Chicago, that it would be impossible to cover everything here, but here are a few of the most popular sites:

Buckingham FountainI have to start off with my favorite place in the city...Buckingham Fountain. On a warm summer's evening, this is the place that you want to be. This is one of the largest fountains in the world, and with a capacity of over 1.5 million gallons of water!  The center water spout shoots over 14,000 gallons of water straight upward for 200 feet, each minute. In the evening ,over 650 lights dance over the cascading waters blending in a kaliediscope of magnificent colors.

Lions at the Art Institute of ChicagoThe Art Institute of Chicago is the largest and oldest Art Museum and School located in the midwest. It was established by a group of businessmen in1879, under the name The Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.  In 1882 it was received to it's present name.
The vast collections include works by a number of well known artists. Included among them are Monet, Matisse, O'Keefe, Wood, Warhol, Hopper, and the list goes on and on.
The Museum is also well known for an ongoing exhibit, titled the Thorn Rooms. These are miniature replicas of rooms from the 16th through 20th centuries. Many of them, such as the Andrew Jackson room, are scale copies of rooms from historical houses.

Sears TowersIt is disputed if the 110-story Sears Tower is the largest building in the world. Some claim that the title is Sears Towernow held by Petronas Towers in Malaysia. New guidelines have been established that separate height into four categories. The Sears Towers holds the top spot in two of the levels, with the highest roof, and highest occupied floor.  It is only the decorative spirals at the top of the Petronas Towers that gives it the additional boost into the top spot.
Sears Tower is home to most of the major broadcasting stations, both television and radio, in the Chicago area. In addition, over 15,000 workers are employed within the offices, shops, restaurants and grounds and building management within the building.
