| Glenn's Journal for 9-25-02 - Prague Our first full day in Prague and we are off to a slow start. Again, remember we had the room to ourselves for the first time during this trip, so I will let you use your imagination. We left for town a little before noon where we left a message for Ryan and Casey on the message board that we were taking the 1:30 pm walking tour of Prague and where to meet us. We didn't know if they would get it in time but we tried. The train station was next on our stops so we could get information on trains, costs, and times to Vienna on Friday. Even with the Eurorail pass we would have to buy a supplement ticket to get from Prague to the border or we could pay for the complete ticket and save a day on our Eurorail pass for some other sections of our trip. After gathering the information that we needed we found the tour group at the designated location near the museum at the end of Wenceslas Square. The tour started a little after 1:30 pm and was scheduled for approximately 4 hours. The tour guide was a stuudent (from Berlin) who had only lived in Prague since she started school 3 years ago. She definitely had an accent which required some decenet listening skills to catch everythig she was saying. The tour started in the New Quarter, walked our way to the Old Town Square, through the Jewish Quarter, the Lesser Quarter and then on to the Prague Castle. The tour took over 4 1/2 hours and was delayed for many reasons including the fact that one of the tour participants stopped to take a million photos and got lost when our tour guide could not wait any longer for him. He caught up with the tour later looking for his wife only to find out that she had left the tour group earlier to locate him. (We all wondered what would happen when they finally found each other!!) The other issues we had with the tour were that the guide was not as confident as we would have liked so she did not lead the group very well and she seemed to only know what she had learned from a predetermined script and could not answer many of our questions. We had much better walking tours in Berlin and Barcelona. It probably depends on the tour guide as much as the tour company. We finally finished the very long and dragged out tour after 6:00 pm before heading back into town for dinner. We found a little restaurant on the way back into town and had dinner and drinks with 4 others from todays walking tour. After dinner we took off on our own, walked around Old Town square again before heading back to the hostel for an earlier than usual night. (We do have the place to ourselves!!!) |
