Glenn's Journal for 10-01-02 - Salzburg We are up early as we would like to catch the 10:18 train to Salzburg. We packed and headed out around 9:30 am as we wanted to stop at the grocery store for breakfast before getting on the train. Erin bought some applesaft (applejuice) and pastries for the trip. We made the train with plenty of time to spare. We sat in 1st class in one of those 6 seat cabins that you sometimes get in the non-reserved section. There was another couple sitting in the cabin before we entered whom politely moved over to make room for us. Then we did the usual introduction of where are you from, where are you traveling to, how long are you on holiday, etc... The other couple were from Temecula, just a few hours south of where we live in California. What a small world?? We started talking about current affairs (as we do not get a chance to keep up with the news), our travels (current and past), and life in general. Well, before we know it we have talked for most of the trip to Salzburg, which is a 3 1/2 hour journey. The trip went by very fast as we diidn't realize where the time had gone. We finally introduced ourselves and were introduced to Maryann and Doug. We arrived in Salzburg around 1:45 pm and ended up spending the rest of the day touring around town with Maryann and Doug before they had to catch an 8:00 pm train back to Vienna. Our day around town was just a day to become acclimated to Salzburg. Maryann was interested in the local food, especially strum (which is freshly crushed grapes that are in the process of fermenting). You can not seal the bottle so when we bought some in the store it comes with an aluminum foil cover on the wine bottle. Our first stop was the hostel (Yoho's) where Maryann and Doug patiently waited while we dropped our bags off in our room. We then walked towards the main part of town, and towards the castle overlooking Salzburg. We strolled along the Salzach river which runs through the center of town. We walked by the Rathaus (Town Hall) and a few of the main squares. We stopped in a little restaurant for lunch and ordered some strum. Once we had received our strum we then ordered food only to find out that it was after 3:00 pm and food was not being served again until 6:00 pm. We ventured back out for some additional siteseeing while continuing our search for food. After strolling through the market place and views of the Castle and churches, we sat down to dinner around 6:00 pm. Maryann tried the lamb (which was not the best),Erin had the perch (which was excellent), and Doug and I had the wienerschnitzel (which wasn't too bad). After dinner Maryann and Doug returned to the train station to catch the 8:00 pm train back to Vienna. At that point of the day we returned to the hostel to settle in and call it a day. Upon our return to the hostel around 8:45 pm we found one of our roommates asleep. In an effort to be good roommates we went back out, walked around the local area, and found a bar where we had a drink and chatted for a while. By the time we returned around 11:00 pm we found both roommates asleep so we quietly made our beds and crashed for the evening. |
