Glenn's Journal for 10-02-02 - Salzburg

Wednesday morning and our first full day in Salzburg. The roommates were up and gone early this morning. We enjoyed a hot breakfast at the bar downstairs before checking out the town. At breakfast we met a young lady, Joy, and her friend Min Sun, who are from Seoul, Korea. They are traveling around Europe for a while before returning home. We shared email addresses as she invited us to contact her if we made our way to Korea and we did the same in California.

Salzburg is a quaint town and we were ready for a peaceful locale with a beautiful backdrop. On our list today is definitely a leisurely day to include checking out the view from the castle and doing anything else that comes to mind. We make our way to the castle across the river and through the main squares of the town. We took the cable car up to the castle as it is a 20+ minute walk all uphill to the castle and the cable car only costs $2 a person. The views from the castle are spectacular overlooking the Bavarian Alps and the surrounding countryside. We walked around the castle for a few hours before walking back into town. We sat and watched a couple of old guys play chess in Dom Platz on a 24 foot by 24 foot chess board. The men who were waiting to play were playing on regular chess sets surrounding the larger set. We snacked on a pretzel while we watched.

After the chess game we wandered through the food market and through some other squares. We bought a 2 liter bottle of strum in the market which we enjoyed (some) while we ate some bratwurst at a stand in the the market. We then found ourselves walking along the river where we sat to enjoy the view and continue drinking the strum. Our next stop was the Kurgarten, which is featured on many of the postcards of Salzburg. The garden area along with the view back to the castle was definitely a postcard picture. We sat and enjoyed the garden before finishing our stroll through the garden area. After the garden we returned to the hostel to catch dinner and maybe even work on some journals.

Upon our return to the hostel we relaxed before heading down to dinner. Yoho's does offer a decent breakfast and dinner for the price. After dinner we found new roommates sharing the room with us. Tony and Jane are from the Bay of Islands in New Zealand and have a bed & breakfast. They are semi-retired and traveling around Europe for a few months. We chatted for quite a while before calling it a night.
