Glenn's Journal for 10-03-02 - Salzburg Today we are off to Wolfgangsee, and more specifically St Wolfgang, which is approximately 50 minutes by bus to St Gilgen and then 50 minutes by boat to St Wolfgang. Well our day was full of just misses. After breakfast we hurried to the train/bus station to locate the bus to St Gilgen. We checked with a person at the newstand who pointed out the door and to the right. We hurried towards a bus that was just leaving (as it was 10:15 am and the bus was scheduled to leave at 10:15 am). Well the driver was nice enough to point is in the right direction and by the time we had turned around the bus we really wanted was leaving. The next bus did not leave until 11:15 am. Oh well, we took advantage of the time by going to the post office and mailing postcards from the last 3 cities that we had not found the time to mail yet. At least one task accomplished!! The 11:15 am bus arrives and we get on the bus. Now the trick is (per the schedule) to arrive in St Gilgen at 12:10 pm and catch the 12:15 pm boat to St Wolfgang. Well as our day would have it we ran into a delay due to some road work and didn't arrive into St Gilgen until 12:20 pm. The next boat left at 1:15 pm. We used this time to walk around St Gilgen, stop and get some groceries for lunch, and find our way to the docks. We maade the 1:15 pm boat which arrived into St Wolfgang SchafbergBahnhof at 1:52 pm. From here there is a Cog Railway that runs to the top of the mountain that overlooks the surrounding lakes and mountains. The next departure was set for 2:40 pm. Well by the time we had hit all of our snags for the day it didn't make sense to take the railway up to the top as the schedule to return would have only allowed us 14 minutes at the top. So we decided to walk as far up the mountain as we wished (lookig for a beautiful and peaceful view) before we stopped. After about 45 minutes of straight walking uphill we found an excellent location. We sat on a bench reading our books while enjoying the view and the people that were descending from the mountain. After spending a relaxing hour we returned to town where we walked 10 minutes to St Wolfgang Markt. Here we window shopped and found another park bench with a spectacular view of the Alps while we waited to catch the boat back to St Gilgen. We arrived into St Gilgen in time to catch the 6:05 pm bus back to Salzburg. Upon our return to Salzburg we stopped into an internet cafe to check e-mails before returning to our hostel for dinner. While we were gathering dinner we ran into Joy and quickly shared our adventures from the last few days in Salzburg. Again dinner was decent, for the price, and after we returned to our room to continue working on journals. Only a few minutes after we arrived our roommates Tony and Jane returned from dinner where we sat up and talked for a while before retiring for the evening. Tomorrow we are off to Munich and the Oktoberfest!!! |
