Glenn's Journal for 10-04-02 - Salzburg

Friday is a busy day as we are still checking out things in Salzburg before leaving tonight for Munich. We packed our bags and locked everything up in a locker before heading out for the day. Today we actually got going a little earlier as we made it to the 9:18 train (we were running though!!) heading to Hallein. From Hallein we would take the bus to Bad Durrnberg where we would find the infamous salt mines. We thouroughly enjoyed a 1 hour tour of the salt mines to include the history along with a few slides that you must take along the tour. The tour also includes the wearing of a white suit so you do not get any of the mining dirt on your clothes, especially while you are riding the slides. The tour rails you into the mountain where you will start the tour at approximately 80 meters below ground. The tour takes you as low as 210 meters below ground at the deepest point (but not the deepest point of the mine) and includes crossing into Germany from Austria under ground. We enjoyed the tour.

We found our way back to town before 1:00 pm where we get a bus to the Hellbrunn Palace. The Hellbrunn palace is known for its trick water fountains as the tour guide says to expect to get wet. Well, we didn't want to pay the entry fee so we strolled around the gardens (and even peeked through a hedge to watch the trick fountains) and surrounding grounds before cathcing the bus back to town.

Once back in town we stopped at a grocery store for lunch (for the train ride) before returning to the hostel to gather our backpacks. We then returned to the train station, bought tickets on the next train to Munich, and got on the train where we had lunch before the train had even left the station.

The train ride was a short hour and a half before we arrived into Munich. We were staying with friends, Helena and Andreas, while in Munich which was fantastic. We had e-mailed prior to our arrival and they had provided directions on how to get to their place. At the Hauptbanhoff we switched to the U-Bahn, got off 4 stops later, exited the U-Bahn in the right direction and found their place within minutes. Our arrival time coincided very well with their arrival time home from work at around 6:45 pm. The rest of the night was spent chatting and included a fantastic home cooked meal. We stayed up until almost midnight before we all looked tired and ready for bed. We are very happy and thankful to be staying with friends. Thanks Helena and Andreas!!!
