Glenn's Journal for 10-08-02 - Munich

Today we had the chance to sleep in and we took advantage of the opportunity. We didn't get to bed until after 1:00 am last night so we slept in until 9:30 am. Once awake we enjoyed a relaxing breakfast before heading out on what was a sunny and beautiful day. Our first stop was to meet Andreas at his place of employment, BMW. He works in finance and was willing to take us on a factory tour, which we were both interested in. The factory tour was very interesting and afterwards we enjoyed lunch in the BMW cafeteria. This cafeteria was fantastic and puts my old cafeteria to shame.

After lunch Erin and I spent a few hours at the BMW museum where we learned many things about the history of BMW. I especially enjoyed the prototypes of the futuristic cars and motorcycles on display. After spending 2+ hours at the museum we checked out the Olympic stadium area before grabbing a U-bahn to Marienplatz. At Mariensplatz we checked out the Rathaus and the Glockenspiel (Clock Tower) before doing some window shopping. Actually we stopped in to a bookstore where we purchased a book of names for our friends who are having a baby.

From here we continued to window shop before finding our way to St. Peter's Church. Here we walked all the way to the top, well over 200 steps, for a marvelous view of Munich. Erin took a few pictures while we waited for the Glockenspiel to peform. At certain hours of the day after the clock strikes the hour it will play a song utilizing the bells in the tower. Upon doing so there are little figurines that go around including two knights who are jousting until one looses. Pretty cool stuff especially from the view from above the Glockenspiel that we had. After returning to the ground we continued our window shopping until just before 6:00 pm. We caught the U-Bahn back to the apartment so we could wash a last load of laundry on our last night with Helena and Andreas.

Helena and Andreas arrived home between 7:15 and 8:00 pm. Erin finished the laundry while Helena made an excellent lasagna for dinner. We enjoyed dinner and wine while talking until well after 11:00 pm. We both had early days tomorrow as they had to go to work while we planned on catching the 9:33 am train to Mainz.
A Prototype BMW motorcycle with 2 rear wheels spaced closely together and a shell for the body. Pretty Cool!!!
