Glenn's Journal for 11-6-02  Cape Town

Today we had breakfast at the hostel before taking out towards the waterfront area. Some of the other travellers are heading out to Table Mountain but we will do that later this week. On the way to the waterfront we stopped to call Renate, our Cape Town friend that we had met on safari. We agreed to meet her at the office and then decide on dinner or drinks for later. We walked along the beach on our way to the waterfront. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is definitely very modern and equivalently more expensive than most of the places in Cape Town. Once at the waterfront we spent time wandering through the mall before stopping for lunch. After lunch we continued our way through the mall before heading outside to enjoy the sunshine. We found a grassy area along the water where we napped and read before heading into town to locate Renate.

After less than an hour walk we located the building that Renate works in and went up to the ninth floor to find her. After departing work we went in search of dinner and drinks when we ended up at the Dharma Club. We arrived around 6:30 pm but they didn't open until 7:00 pm for dinner so we sat in the bar area while we waited. Dinner and conversation was very enjoyable as we sat until well after 9:00 pm enjoying the meal.

Renate also knew a friend that had an apartment for rent for 180 rand ($18) per night, and that was only $1 more than what we were already paying. The apartment was a fully furnished two bedroom, kitchen, living / dining room overlooking Cape Town and Table Mountain. We could not refuse so we had to plan on how to move tomorrow. We had booked a day trip to Cape Point for tomorrow and would not be back until 6:30 pm. Luckily Renate had French class until 7:00 pm and could pick us up after that. Perfect!!! It was settled. We would check out in the morning, leave our luggage at the hostel and then meet Renate at the hostel after her class.

After dinner Renate dropped us off at the hostel where we stopped at the bar before heading off to bed. Tomorrow we are off to Cape Point on a day trip.
