Glenn's Journal for 11-15-02 to 11-16-02 Buffels Bay Friday morning and, after breakfast, we are off to Buffels Bay and the Wildside Backpackers. The owners of the hostel in Oudtshoorn were nice enough to drop us off at the minibus taxi stop where we taxi'd back into George. Once in George we switched to another minibus taxi to Knysna. We arrived in Knysna around noon and packed our way to the Highlanders backpacker where we would pick up a shuttle to Wildside. We didn't have to wait long as Simon, the owner, was in town and heading out to the Wildside anyway. Simon was nice enough to stop by the local SPAR where we stocked up on enough groceries for the weekend. The town of Buffels Bay is a 10 minute walk from the hostel and the one restaurant closes at 5:00 pm everyday, so it is good to have your own groceries. We arrived at the hostel shortly after 2:00 pm and stopped into the room long enough to put on my baggies (swim trunks). The hostel is located on the edge of the Goukamma National reserve and, to say the least, on the beach. We were only a few meters away from the ocean and on the beach to the point that the sand found its way into the hostel's main room on a daily basis. This is what the doctor ordered for us, a few days of beach time. We spent some time on the beach but not too much as we would get sunburnt pretty easily. We even took a walk along the beach towards town before turning around at the point where shoes were required. Otherwise we relaxed in the living room (with windows to a view of the ocean crashing on the rocks) reading our books and enjoying the view. Erin cooked chicken stir fry for dinner tonight and it was very good. After dinner Erin caught a movie (television in the hostel) while I sat at the bar playing cards with a bunch of other travellers. Erin went off to bed around 11:00 pm while I stayed up until 12:30 am enjoying the company. G111602 Today we had no other plans than relax on the beach!!! Which is exactly what we did! We spent the day reading books, taking walks, laying out in the sun tanning our bodies, and otherwise truly taking a day off. It felt good and is exactly what we both needed. We had dinner at the hostel which was bangers and mash. Not bad!!! The evening was spent watching movies and reading our books. Tomorrow we are heading back to Plettenberg Bay. |
This was the view that greeted us from the Wildside Backpackers backdoor! |
