In the research of the surname Dalgetty it is found that the surname Dalgetty is descent from the Pictish Race in the 15th Century BC. The Pictish migratrting from the north west part of France sailed to Ireland and there they were refused permission to land. The King of Ireland granted them land located on the Eastern part of Scotland, with that there Kings marry Irish Princesses. According to the Roman History Nechtan in the year 724AD was recorded as the first Pictish King was expelled from Pictland . The Picts compressed by invasion of the Orcadian Vikings from the north were left with territory on the eastern coast of Scotland from Aberdeenshire to South of Edinburgh. A village on the east side of Scotland called Dalgetty stood at the head of Dalgety Bay where Pope Alexander III founded the Church of Dalgetty. During the middle ages the orginal village was destroyed, the ruins still mark its site. The new town of Dalgetty came into existence in the early sixties. During the disputes in the 1600 a Captain Dugald Dalgetty later a Major in the about the year 1632 from the area of Drumthwacht in the regiments who was said to be a braggart and a thief is one of the most celebrated Scots during this period, as written by Sir Walter Scott in his novel A Legend of Montrose. Scott is said to be related to a man by the name of Delgatty, who fought in the wars at this time.. The surname Dalgetty is listed under the Clan McDuf. McDuff was the laird of the land and the Dalgettys had land under the Clan McDuff during the 17th century. The Dalgetty tartan falls under the Clan Hay even though the surname falls under the Clan McDuff. Through the years the family name Dalgetty has had several variations, to distinguish one family from another, even though they were related, with there land. EXAMPLE: DALGETY, DALGATY, DALGETIE, DELGATY, DALGITY, DALGETTY, AND DELGETIE. Our direct ancestors have been traced back to the year 1631 in Scotland to John Dalgetie who married Eleanor Ogilvey in the year 1650. William James Dalgety our Great Great Great Great Grandfather was born in Brechin, Angus, Scotland he married Mary Nairn. William James Dalgety was a Colonel in the British Army along with his brother David Dalgety, they fought against Russia with the Turkish, French and English forces in the Crimea War from 1854 to 1856. Our direct family started to emigrate during the 1900's to Canada. |
COMING TO CANADA |
John and James Dalgetty sons of William James Dalgetty emgrated to Canada from Scotland between the years of 1905 and 1906, first coming to Calgary. John Dalgetty in the year 1910 moved from Calgary to Carstairs were he homesteaded, later moving to the Berry Creek/Wardlow district. David Dalgetty our Great Great Grandfather and his brother William Dalgetty sons of David and Isabella (Reid ) Dalgetty emigrated to Canada, from Scotland in the year 1909, first coming to Calgary, to join their Uncles John and James. David Dalgetty and his brother William Dalgetty moved to the Berry Creek/Wardlow district of Alberta were they homesteaded along with there Uncle John. David Dalgetty was a plumber by trade in Scotland and his brother William was a carpenter. David and William did considerable work in helping build a town called Sheerness located west of Wardlow, using their skills, as will as homsteading. The first of our Great Great Grandfather David Dalgetty direct family to join him and his brother in Wardlow, was their two sisters Edith and Lily. Our Great Great Great Grandparents David and Isabella ( Reid ) Dalgetty joined the rest of the family shortley after. Our Great Grandfather David Robb Dalgetty along with his mother Isabella ( Robb) Dalgetty came to Canada to join his father David Dalgetty in 1921, in Wardlow. Our Great Great Grandparents had two other children both born in Canada, by the names of William Hugh, and Jane Anne Isabella Dalgetty. Our Great Great Grandmother died shortly after the birth of her daughter Jane Anne Isabella Dalgetty and was buried in the Berry Creek Cemetery on April 30, 1924. Shorlty after the death of our Great Great Grandmother, the Dalgetty family moved into Drumheller, renting out their land for a few years, then because of draught conditions their land was abandoned. Our Great Great Great Grandparents David and Isabella ( Reid ) Dalgetty moved into Calgary, were they had a chicken farm located at 1728 - 48th Avenue SW. Our Great Grandfather David Robb and his brother William Hugh and his sister Jane Anne Isabella came to Calgary with their grandparents David and Isabella, and raised on the chicken farm. Our Great Great Grandfather David Dalgetty moved to Regina and remarried Ann Walker Galbraith in 1930. |
