Daniel Lam Dear 82ers, Hope that you are all doing well. It's good that we are getting our class news together again. Looking forward to reading about everyone. Well, where should I begin? I'll start from the beginning of this decade. I think you all know that I left my job at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, VA, and moved down to Columbia, SC to attend seminary. Well, five years later, I finally graduated with a Master of Divinity. It took five years, because I went part time for two years, and took one year off to work. But more interesting news is that I am married to a wonderful woman who is also an MK from Taiwan, the former Anita Stafford. Yes, we celebrated our second anniversary about a month ago. No kids yet, but they will come as the Lord wills. We're ready for them. Presently, I am working at a civil engineering consulting firm here in Columbia, SC. My undegrad degree was Mechanical Engineering, but I couldn't find an ME job in town. I do enjoy my job though. I do site design for commercial and residential properties. I design the parking layout and utilities such as water, sewer and storm drainage. It is pretty interesting work. In addition to that, I am learning to be a network administrator for the network we just started this year. We are running the network with Windows NT 4.0. I don't know too much, but it seems I have become a computer "expert" at the company, because I know just a little bit more than the other person. Anita was working, but she quit to get some rest for about a month. Now she is looking to work again, but only part time. She is looking to be a substitute teacher, or at least work with elementary age children in some way. Comlumbia, SC is not our first choice to reside, but at this time it doesn't seem that the Lord is leading us anywhere else. But while we are here, it seems that the Lord has given us a vital ministry with the youth at the Chinese Christian Church of Columbia. This past summer, we took 8 of our junior high kids to the DC/LA '97 Youth for Christ Superconference in LA. After the conference, we went to Ensenada, Mexico for a a week long missions trip. It was rather trying dealing with junior high kids, but we all learned a little about ourselves, and the kids got a glimpse of what it means to be a missionary and the sacrifice it takes. During the week, a significant amount of our cash was stolen. The kids were furious and were feeling resentful for being there. We had to remind them that their focus in Mexico was ministry, not souvenirs to take home. The time there was too short to make a huge impact on their lives, but Anita and I have seen change in the lives of the kids. They are more active in taking part in the ministry of our church now. I think that they realize that they can be a part of God's work. As you may have gathered, the youoth work here is our big deal. We pray for more people to come alongside and help us wiht this vital ministry of raising tomorrow's leaders to know God and make Him known. I think I've covered the last seven years pretty well. TTFN God bless you, Dan and Anita Lam |
