Jim Cummings November 9, 1998 Dear Friends and Family, We are waiting now for the big event. We're doing well but a little nervous. Christy is ready to have the baby at any moment now. She is starting to feel the labour pains. Christy is out of language school now and getting everything prepared for the baby. We have much to do since I could not do a lot of work around the house for about a month. I hurt my ankle playing basketball resulting in a small facture. It took a while to heal and still swells up if I walk on it too much. We are so thankful for the friends we have amde here in Taiwan and that we can study Chinese full time. We can't wait to be able to fully share about Jesus in Chinese. We are remineded so often of those who don't know Christ as we see myriads of temples around us and see people worshipping their gods and ancester with incense and food offerings on the sidewalks. Caroline is in a Chinese nursery when we study in school. She has many little Taiwan friends and has already learning to speak some Chinese. She is a little social butterfly. Many people come up to her and say, "yang wa wa (little dolly)." She gets so much attention since people do not usually see foreign babies. We hope it doesn't spoil her but it does make us proud. She has given us great opportunities to meet people. The nursery had a day when the celebrated all the November birthdays. Caroline was given a little hat designed as an elephant. They sang songs and she was dancing around. She has a little Chinese boy friend her age and she loves to play with him. She calls him "baby." We have found a Taiwan church to worship in. It is a cell group church. It is quite a large church for Taiwan (about 270 people attending). After the baby is born and things settle down and with that, I will get more involved in some of the leadership. I have known the pastor since he was a seminary student over 15 years ago. I have started teaching English just a few hours a month at a high school English club. It is located across the street from the church so it gives us an opportunity to impact our local community. I just came back recently from Hong Kong and Macau where we had our ministry team's annual conference in Hong Kong. Christy was not able to go because of the pregnancy. It was the first time I went to the conference. Our leader Paul Mayhugh has a great vision for reaching Chinese people for Christ and both Christy and I love the fact that the ministry in Macau is based on evangelism and church planting. Every year, many Chinese contract laborers in Macau become believers from the heavy emphasis the team places on evangelism. God's spirit is at work mightily among these people but the problem is that often they are locked in to working extremely long hours which hinders the discipleship process. We look forward to the time after out language training when we can be in Macau to do ministry there. Please pray for a growing daily intimacy with our Lord, a safe delivery, good progress in the language and for abundant opportunities to share Christ with those we come into contact with. Love, Jim - for the Cummings girls and one little girl on the way Update! November 11, 1998 When a little boy asked his six year old brother why babies are spanked when they are born, the youhgster replied, "To get them used to it." - dog Belknap Dear Friends and Family, We thank all of you so much for your prayers and concerns. WE were very conscious of God's presence. Jacqueline Ann Cummings was born on Nov 10, 1998 after a three hour labor. It was a natural birth but Christy was induced because the doctor thought the baby was getting too big. In Taiwan babies do not weigh as much. He thought the baby was about seven and a half pounds but at birth it was dicovered Jacqueline was almost 9 pounds! NO wonder she didn't want to come out, she was content with all the food she was getting in mother's womb! Our doctor was so helpful to us through out the process and I caught him as I was coming out of the delivery room proudly holding Jacqueline and showing her off. Christy is doing well in the hospital and Daddy is in charge of Caroline. Caroline saw the baby for the first time and she said, "baby," and tried to kiss and hold Jacqueline. Right after that she looked at Christy's multicolored hospital gown and said, "flowers." That's our little fashion conscious two year old! Please pray that Jacqueline would grow up to love the Lord with all her heart, mind and soul and pray also that God would give us wisdom in dealing with two childredn. Thank again and we'll keep in better touch now that our email seems to be up and functioning. Love Jim and the Cummings Girls |
