Tech Tips 101 (Basic Computing Tips)
Did you know your computer is sort of like your car? Say what! You're asking. Well, just like your car needs routine maintenance to keep it running properly so does your computer. Just follow these simple routine maintenance procedures and your computer should keep on running like brand new. And if your computer has been running sluggish lately these procedures should get it running good again in no time. First, go to "Internet Options" in your control panel. Under the General tab in the "Temporary Intenet Files" section click on the "Delete Files" button. These will delete all of your temporary internet files that you do not need for anything. Also check the "Delete all offline content" box. Secondly, click on the "Delete Cookies" button. It should be located beside the delete files button.(If you have passwords, etc. saved for websites do not delete cookies or you will have to re-enter your password again next time you visit that website.) I always delete my cookies any ways. Third, go to your "System Tools". It should be located in your "Accessories" from your "Programs" directory. Run "Disk Cleanup" and "Scan Disk".For Windows XP users, you will not find "Scan Disk" located in your "System Tools". In XP you have to click on "My Computer" then right click on your C drive then click on properties. Once in properties click on the "Tools" tab. Click on the item which says "Error Check". This is what scan disk is called in XP. And finally, run "Disk Defragmenter". It is best to run "Disk Defragmenter" from what is called "Safe Mode". To enter "Safe Mode" first turn your computer off. Then when you turn your computer back on hold down the F8 key. Then when your options appear just choose "Safe Mode". This will make your computer run with nothing running in the background. Sometimes when you try to run "Disk Defragmenter" without going to "Safe Mode" it may not work. Disk Defragmenter does usually take quite a while to run so you might want to start running it before you go to bed. When "Disk Defragmenter" is done running you can get out of "Safe Mode" simply by shutting down your computer as you normally do and when your computer restarts it will automatically go back to it's normal running mode. If you do these simple maintenance procedures about once every month or two you should see great results!
