I hacve heard over the past few years that the Michael Bay films we've been seeing are somewhat restrained. ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR, although both, in my opinion, seriously well-made action films, were lacking that flair that was found in the original BAD BOYS and then THE ROCK. Maybe it was the violence, or the hilarious language., but something just seemed off. Not o me, mind you, bu to everyone else. Well, the old Michael Bay is back and bigger than ever with BAD BOYS 2, a violent, vulgar, hilarious mess of an action movie.
BB2 starts off at least a year after the first one, all characters have gone through therapy, and all are still blowing stuff up. Mike Lowry and Marcus Burnett are now on T.N.T-Tactical Narcotics Team, and are after one of the biggest shipments of Ecstacy in the history of America. Mike is up to his old, shoot first, ask questions after routine, and Marcus now has emotional problems stemming from his therapy. Anyways the two begin to clash more than ever as they run around Miami looking for leads to where these drugs and their dealer might be, getting mixed with DEA, Russians mobsters, and horny rats in the process. (Yes, i just said HORNY RATS)
The actions in this films is HUGE. The chase are on a grand scale, and the explosions are full of fiery fury. Scenes in particular include a huge chase with numerous cars being launched off of a semi-truck, a shootout in a yardy house, and the final run through Cuba (yes, CUBA) to Guantanamo Bay. Everything is upped here, and none of it is really unbelievable, just a bit much, which is still okay.
The comedy is off the wall here as well, with Smith and Larwence bickering at each other constantly. Some of the funniest scene I have ever witnessed are in this film. Watch as the two harass a young boy taking out Marcus' daughter, or watch them have a meaningful talk that brodcasts throughout a video store, making them seem gay. My favorite is when Martin Lawrence ingests some Ecstacy, and then takes a trip over to their captains house. Hilarious stuff all around.
BAD BOYS 2 is by no means a masterpiece. Although it is well-filmed, full of action, and hilarious, it is still just an action movie from Michael Bay, and it never pretends to be anything more than that. It's a huge sound machine with lots of visuals, all in all, this flicks isn't to BAD. |
