Introduction

Guinea Pigs are small animals and they love to eat many foods, which will be explained below. Guinea Pigs are very furry, and some think that they are rodents/rats, but the truth is that they are not rats. Guinea pigs are just like squirrels, rabbits, rats, ferrets, chinchillas, etc. But did you ever wonder why they're all just the same? Well, it's because they're from the same family, and they have the same appearances. They're all related. You have to be careful because they get scared very fast, and the facts below will tell you more about what to do and what not to do and how to decide on getting a guinea pig.

Food & Water

Guinea pigs eat a variety of food but they need some calcium and Vitamin C. Guinea Pigs love fresh greens and vegetables which make them healthy - along with fresh hay, but remember, don't feed them too much or else they'll get diarrhea. When you take them out of their cage, always remember to get your pooper scooper because they'll be pooing all over if you scare them. Also, remember that you could feed them Timothy Hay which is what they'll LOVE!!!
Here's a list of foods that Guinea Pigs Eat:

Vegetables such as: spinach, carrots, romaine lettuce, grass, tomatoes,

Frui

Alfal

Yogourt drops, grass on their condos, pellets (Vitamin C)

Wood

Even though I listed all the foods above that mainly guinea pigs eat, there could be a daily amount of food that you could feed to your guinea pig that they will like and that's good for them which also helps their teeth to become strong.

Guinea pigs NEED to be strong! In order for you to do that is by making them do layups or "laps" everyday for at least 30 minutes max. After that, let your guinea pig stretch to reach to higher places in order for him to build up muscles, etc. Think just like humans are, animals are! But also try to make it fun for them! Too much stress is bad!

How do they drink?

Have you ever wondered how to give your pet a drink to drink? Well, I have two ways that will answer your question!
1.) Buy those water bottles that are leakproof, and first take the metal that looks like a horseshoe, and put the front part that is bent down (two parts) and stick those on the cage facing frontwards. Then, stick the waterbottle in there, and your guinea pig could go drink away!
2.) Buy those bowls, or use one from home; that you could fill enough water (But not too much) for your guinea pig to drink. As simple as anything!
3.) If you can, add at least 3 drops of Vitamin C liquid in their water for a healthier living!

Once you get that, your guinea pig is safe as ever could be! Guess how much it costs? Only $70.00! That's cheap! I bought it at Markville Mall next to Scarborough, and in Doogans, located next to that gift shop, and the stairs leading to Wal Mart. Once you buy it there, you'll never go spending again!!

Toys & Games

Your guinea pig NEEDS toys! First you need to know, why do guinea pigs need toys for? They've got food and water, but they now need toys? Well, I'll answer your question! Guinea Pigs need toys so that they have company. How would you feel if you were poor, and have no toys at all? Wouldn't you feel sad? Embarrased? Scared? Well yea, but worse of all, you'll feel BORED outa your mind! So that's EXACTLY how guinea pigs feel. They feel bored as ever when they have no toys - unless they have a companion with them. Also, above when I mentioned about guinea pigs needing their exercise, they could also exercise by climbing up toys, and playing so that they could do that everyday. At first you have to train them because you know them. They LOVE to sniff and sniff and sniff!
The different toys you could buy for your guinea pig are like dog toys, that when your guinea pig hits it, it'll sway back and forth. No harm is caused, and it's made especially for guinea pigs! There's also boxes for your guinea pig to climb on, wood to chew on, houses to play in, etc stuff like that. I gave Ginny a log, a condo, and an igloo. If you don't train them, they wouldn't have as much fun!

Why are they called Guinea Pigs?

The reason guinea pigs are called Guinea Pigs are that...wait a minute, did you say that guinea pigs are really pigs? I think I heard you wrong!! Guinea pigs ARE NOT Pigs at all! Nothing compared to pigs! They have no appearances that are the same, no relations, nothing at all! They are not the same! Trust me! Look below at the differences:

My Guinea Pig

Now that you know most of the facts on guinea pigs, now I'll tell you everything about what my guinea pig went through, his likes/dislikes, his food, etc. Have fun!

Him

My guinea pig's name is Ginny of course, and he's about 1 year + half. Ginny is a male, and he has reddish, brownish, goldish fur. He's all grown up right now, so I expect him to be more mature. His bed time is at now at 9:00 p.m., and sometimes goes to sleep, but at other times, he squawks, etc. Ginny poos regularly, and he drinks his water a lot. I would recommend you to buy a guinea pig because they are one of the most quietest animals. That's the best part. The worse thing they do is poo and pee and shed.
The noises that guinea pigs make are purrs, squeaks, squeals, squawks and sometimes loud scared squeaks that right there and then, you know that they want something or that they don't like what you are doing to them.
Once after a week, you'll start picking up your guinea pig, and having fun with him. I'd suggest to you NOT to take them outside during the winter, plus, if it's really sunny, and you want your guinea pig to have the time of their life, then I'd suggest not to. The reason for being is that, in the Winter, guinea pigs could die of coldness, plus they'll get so scared they could get a heart attack. In the spring, or summer when it's REALLY really hot, guinea pigs will be directed by sun RIGHT on them wherever they go, and whenever there's direct sunlight on guinea pigs, they could die very easily from Heat Stroke, which could also cause a burn. So lets hope that your guinea pig doesn't die like that, and so fast.
When I took my guinea pig outside in the sun, he was so scared, but when we put him down on the deck, he just stayed there and never even moved a leg. He was so scared that when he heard the birds, he just jumped, and when we took him inside, he was squeaking like crazy! So be careful not to hurt them with sun or coldness.
Ginny loves food, but when I feed him too much, he either poos, pees, or he gets diarrhea, just like I said above. Check out below what he eats:

What does Ginny eat?

You wanna know what my guinea pig eats? He eats, carrots, spinach, romaine lettuce, apples (His FAVOURITE), alfalfa, Timothy Hay, pellets = Vitamin C, and way more fruits such as: strawberries, etc. He loves apples so much that when you're like one distance far away from him, and you're holding an apple, he could smell the apple from where he is, to you and he just runs to you for it. I'd suggest not to feed him any dairy foods, just stick to everything else besides dairy foods. Your guinea pig could die with eating cheese, etc. So, if there are any sites that tell you to feed your guinea pig cheese, or ice cream, or any more dairy foods, they're totally wrong. They just want you to kill your guinea pig! But i'm telling you, I have a guinea pig myself, and if I feed him cheese, or anything like that, he would die! Trust me!

His Shelter(s)

Did you see above on what he lives in? Well yes, he lives in an igloo (Made of plastic) and he used to live in this really nice straw house but now it's all broken up because he ate it! That's all he has, and guess what, that's more than enough! He also has a cage. He loves coming out of his cage, but remember, set a time limit for how long you want your guinea pig to stay out, because he/she could starve, die of thirst, get sleepy (That's ok, but you don't wanna pick them up while sleeping because they're so cute when they sleep), get hungry, need to go to the washroom, or they could get sick. My guinea pig has been out for at least 6 h. the most once, but now I set a time limit so that he doesn't get sick, and so that he stays healthy. 2 h. is his time limit because he doesn't poo as fast as the others. You could spend an hour one day teaching him how to exercise, and in the night, he could go play and stuff like that, but all in all, if you want to let him play, set a time limit to that.

Emotions

Do you know what I mean about emotions on Guinea Pigs? Well, when they're mad, sad, happy, etc. The ways to get your guinea pig mad, which I know that you don't want to do that; is by holding him in an improper spot, or in an irregular way. Also, if you snatch something from him then he'll get really mad that if you have a cloth, or something there, they'll start biting on it, OR they'll turn away and they won't talk to you. Just like human moods! Same thing! Guinea pigs get sad if you don't play with them or if you leave them somewhere with nothing there. That's sad!! Also, they'll be happy if you do the opposite of getting them to be mad, and sad. Plus add more stuff like give them what they want, etc.

How do I decide on buying a guinea pig?

Are you wondering how to decide on buying a guinea pig? Well, I could see that! I'm here to tell you EVERYTHING! First, think of their behaviours by going to the Emotions section and figuring out whether or not you should get a guinea pig because of their noises. Believe me, they don't make noise that much! Just when you're there, the tend to showoff a little, and you know!
Next, think of what species you want. Do you want the male or the female? Furry or non-furry. Get the furry ones. You want a furry friend in the house? Buy a furry Guinea pig. No difference in price whether or not they're male/female, furry/non-furry.
After that, plan out the amount of money you'll be spending. On another page, I will put a quick spreadsheet so that you could organise your thoughts on buying the items you need for a guinea pig. Example: $70.00 = Starter Kit
