---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ( C ) REPROBATE PROPHETS The scriptures have revealed in the previous sections, that reprobate people are capable of promoting an outward and visible appearance which looks and sounds holy and Christian when the reality is that such people don’t even have a relationship with the Holy God and certainly do not allow the Lordship of Jesus Christ in their lives. In the Old Testament, there were people who were called false prophets. These reprobate persons promoted themselves to be the Lords’ prophets and the signs or wonders that they prophesied were even capable of coming to pass. Such a situation could become very deceptive by virtue of the fact that God Himself gave the criteria for proving who the false prophets were as opposed to His true prophets. The criteria being that what the false prophet had prophesied, if it, the prophecy, did not come to pass then it was a prophecy that the Lord did not speak. Thus, the prophecies of the true prophets of the Lord did come to pass. Let us read of the scriptural criteria of the false prophets; 20. But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die. 21. And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the Lord hath not spoken? 22. When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. - Deut. 18:20-22 God makes clear and simple, the standard for knowing what prophecies are His as opposed to those which are not. If the word spoken by the prophet in the name of the Lord does not come to pass then the Lord did not give the prophet those words to speak. This is a false prophet. God did not send him. Or her as there are prophetesses. Therefore, the prophetic words which come to pass simply means that the Lord God did give the words to the prophet to be spoken to His people. This is a true prophet of the Lord and such examples of true prophets are Isaiah, Zechariah, Joel and Daniel. Now let us take a look at the scripture concerning false prophets who prophecy and their prophecy does come to pass; 1. If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2. And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3. Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 4. Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. 5. And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the Lord your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the Lord thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee. - Deut. 13:1-5 Here the scriptures reveal that there are instances in which a false prophet gives a prophecy, the prophecy then comes to pass and yet the Lord God instructs His people not to follow that prophet. Even though the prophesied sign or wonder came to pass, this particular type of prophet is a false one because the motive and desire of the words of the prophet is to cause the people of God to turn from and reject God and thereby serve other gods. This scriptural evidence in the book of Deuteronomy reveals the characteristics of the reprobate person. The false prophet appears to be of God and gives a word to Gods’ people to be heeded and followed under the guise of that word being instruction which has come directly from God. Not only is the prophetic word given in the Lords’ name but that word even comes to pass. What was prophesied did in truth occur. God Himself states that this kind of situation does happen. But because the word of the false prophet was evil due to the deliberate intent to turn Gods’ people away from and against Him, then even a fulfillment of said prophecy is not to be accepted and embraced by Gods’ people. Thus they should not then act upon and participate in the instruction and word of the reprobate, false prophet. The deciding factor in such a deceitful situation is the content of the words which the prophet speaks, not the prophesied sign or wonder which comes to pass. This may seem like common knowledge and common sense. Nevertheless, in the New Testament, Jesus and His apostles warn of such false appearances in the last days. Not only do they warn of such false appearances but also that many people would embrace such things. Therefore, what would seem to be common knowledge, is not essentially the case. Deception is an important issue in the scriptures because it is a powerful tool of Satan. Jesus stated; 3. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. - Matt. 24:3-5 11. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. - Matt. 24:11 23. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25. Behold, I have told you before. 26. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. - Matt. 24:23-26 ( also see Mark 13:3-6, 22-23 / Luke 21:7-8 ) Notice that Jesus clearly concludes that false Christs and false prophets will show great signs and wonders. Just like the false prophets and dreamers mentioned in Deuteronomy 13. Deception, false prophets, false Christs, false signs and wonders, the deceiving of many people. These things occurred in the Old Testament and they were prophesied to occur as the time grew near for Christs’ Second Coming. Again, these people are reprobate. They profess a knowledge of God and Christ and even have a following of signs and wonders ( 2 Thess. 2:8-10 ) and good works just like the people in Matthew 7:22 and Titus 1:16. The apostle Peter wrote these words; 1. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. - 2 Peter 2:1-3 With these words of holy instruction and warning, Peter speaks of false prophets and false teachers who by their destructive words will cause many people to follow and give heed to their poisonous and corrupt ways. Notice that Peter writes of false prophets who were among the people, past tense. A reference to the false prophets of whom God Himself warned His people against in Deuteronomy chapter 13. These false prophets and false teachers are Satans’ people along with the false apostles and reprobate workers of iniquity which are still around in the world today; 13. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. - 2 Cor. 11:13-15 These types of people give an outward show of godliness along with a profession of knowing the Living God and even having signs and wonders coming to pass along with various and numerous good works being done in the name of Jesus. Yet, amazingly enough and in spite of all these outward appearances and professions of faith, they have no relationship nor fellowship with God or Christ at all. Such people are actually Satans’ children, workers of iniquity who do not even want God in their life. Let us now take one more scriptural look at reprobate people. They were, the reprobates of Jesus’ day. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
