In the time of the judges the Isrealites had done evil in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord sold them into the hands of Jabin, a king of Canaan. The commander of the army, Sisera, had cruelly oppressed the Isrealites so they cried out to the Lord for help. Deborah the wife of Lappidoth was a very wise prophetess, judge, and ruler. She was the only female judge of Isreal and held court for the Isrealites who would come to her to have their disputes settled. She sent for Barak and told him that the Lord said that he should take his army to the place the Lord said they would overtake Sisera's army. Barak told Deborah that he wouldn't go unless she would accompany him. She told him that meant that the Lord would hand Sisera over to a woman, he agreed. The Lord did hand Sisera's army, along with nine hundred chariots, over to the Isrealites but Sisera escaped on foot. He ran to a friend's house whose wife didn't like him and she ended up driving a tent peg through his temple, into the ground and killing him. So Deborah sang a glorious song about the Lord's victory in this great battle. Deborah made herself available to God, to use as He willed and as He prompted her she responded to His will. 'She sent for Barak...and said to him,"The Lord, the God of Isreal, commands you: 'Go, take with you ten thousand men of Nephtali and Zebulun and lead the wayto Mount Tabor. I will lure Sisera, the commander of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon River and give them into your hands"' {Judges 4:6,7} Even though in those times it was unheard of to have a woman as a leader, God chooses leaders that choose to let Him lead them. 'To the faithful you show yourself faithful, to the blameless you show yourself blameless,' {Psalm 18:25} |
