Pack all smellables in one ditty bag to hang in bear bag.

PERSONAL ITEMS (all individual gear, including sleeping bag & pad, must take up no more room than 2000 cubic inches -- three people must be able to pack all of their individual gear into a space measuring 26"x27"x8.5"):

Bandanna
Belt or suspenders (if needed)
Wet boots (jungle boots, work boots, or old, breathable hiking boots - they will get wet!)
        (do not bring waterproof boots, rubber boots, or expensive hiking boots)
Camp shoes (no sandals, watersocks, or river slippers) (must have a leather or rubber sole)
Food (bring a few energy bars to snack on and supplement the meals)
Hat (wide-brimmed with chin strap)
Hat, baseball style
Knit cap (for sleeping) (optional)
Jacket (very lightweight) or vest (polar fleece is good) (optional)
        (your rain jacket and PFD should be plenty to keep you warm)
Pants (zip-off long pants - 1 or 2 pairs) (must be lightweight, quick-drying) (NO BLUE JEANS!)
        (if you bring 2 pairs, don’t bring any shorts)
Shorts (1 pair - see note about pants) (optional)
Shorts to sleep in and keep in your sleeping bag at all times
Rain gear (jacket and pants - substitutes for extra pants) (no ponchos)
Long sleeved shirt (lightweight) (1 shirt, or 2 if you leave one t-shirt behind) (this is for the bugs and sun!)
T-shirts (2) (will wash on the trail) (leave 1 behind if you bring 2 long-sleeved shirts)
        (advisor has crew t-shirts to wear in base camp)
Cool-Max/polypro type shirt and long johns (for cool evenings, sleeping, and cold, wet weather) (optional)
Socks (2 pairs thick wool hiking socks - one to get wet and one dry pair for in camp)
        (maybe 1 pair of sock liners also)
Underpants (1 pair) (will wash on the trail) (consider wearing no underwear, as they tend to stay wet,
        making one uncomfortable - wet underwear also causes chaffing)
Bowl, plastic (about 12-16 ounces)
Cup, plastic (durable)
Spoons (2) (Lexan or metal - not plastic)
Camera (optional) (double bag in Zip-loc bags)
Film (optional)
Cards, playing (optional)
Chapstick w/ sunscreen
Comb
Duct tape (wrap it around your flashlight, match case, or similar item)
Ear plugs (optional, but a must if you have snorers!)
Eyeglasses (if needed)
Eyeglasses strap (for your glasses or sunglasses)
Sunglasses
Contact lenses, case, and cleaning solution (bring glasses also!) (optional)
Personal first aid kit (with moleskin)
Aspirin, tylenol, or ibuprophen
Anaphylaxis (epi pin) kit if you are allergic to bee stings
Antihistamine or other doctor recommended drug if you are allergic to insect bites
Prescription medication (as needed) (bring twice as much as you need
        and split it between two packs, e.g., two inhalers for asthma)
Fishing equipment (breakdown-style rod [plan to share], reel [lubricate beforehand],
        tackle bag or a pocket-size box [single hook lures only (jigs) - NO BARBS!],
        fillet knife [in sheath], needlenose pliers w/ side cutter)
Fishing license (if you plan to fish - required for ages 16 and older)
        (this may be purchased at the NT trading post for $22.50)
Flashlight (small one - start with fresh batteries) (spare batteries, bulb)
Gloves (for paddling)
Gloves (thin polypropylene to keep mosquitoes and flies off your hands, and for warmth)
Journal (optional, except for crew leader and historian)
Matches in waterproof case
Pen (optional except for crew leader, historian, and adults)
Pocketknife or multi-tool (not both)
Canoe seat back or knee/butt padding (not both!) (optional) (recommended - Crazy Creek canoe chair)
Sleeping bag (about +35 degrees)(put a plastic bag in your stuff sack to keep your bag dry)
Sleeping pad (a small one, not a full-sized Thermarest)
Sleeping pad to seat converter (optional)
Stuff sack (compression type) for sleeping bag (must stuff bag to 10"x18" or smaller)
Stuff sack (compression type) for your clothing and personal gear (line with plastic bag)
Stuff sack (small) or ditty bags for any other miscellaneous gear and loose items (smellables)
        (keep your personal gear segmented so you can find your things easily)
Toothbrush (toothpaste is a shared item)
Towel (small, lightweight, synthetic)
Watch (with alarm)
Water bottle (1 liter/quart) (optional - in addition to the bottle consider a one liter collapsible Platypus)
Whistle
Zip-loc bag (heavy duty, large for washing clothes)
Zip-loc bags for your clothing and personal items (heavy duty) (compress out the air) (take a few extras)

Lock (combination - for crew locker if needed) (if you drive leave things in your vehicle)
Maps of route (one set for each canoe) (to be purchased at NT)

Water container (2.5 gals., collapsible - these are not provided by Northern Tier)
Water filter or purifier (optional - these are not really needed and they take up valuable space)

Food boxes (two Rubbermaid ActionPackers in Kondos Outdoor packs) (green packs)
Gear packs (three 7,400 cu. in. gray Granite Gear packs [32 gallons] - one for each 3 crew members' gear)
        The old #3 Duluth packs had a volume of about 5,300 cubic inches (23 gallons). For many years
        Northern Tier used #3 Duluth packs for 3-person personal packs, so the currently used Granite Gear
        packs - with 38% greater capacity - can actually hold enough gear for 4 people.
        These bags can leak through the seams, pin holes, and the top, if swamped.

Cotton sweatshirts (avoid cotton entirely!)
Electronic devices - unless approved by the crew advisor

Fireworks
Fish landing nets
Fuel bottles (Northern Tier issues fuel bottles and gallon cans that can be crushed when empty)
Kneepads (a small piece of closed-cell foam padding will work and takes up less room)
Pillows (use clothing to fill your sleeping bag stuff sack)
Sheath knives (except your fishing fillet knife)
Stoves (we will use NT stoves)
Tobacco products
Water purifiers (we will use the Polar Pure system, unless you have a medical
         condition proscribing the ingestion of iodine)
Waterproof dry bags (they are too bulky - instead put your things
        in a plastic-lined compression stuff sack)


The Charlie Guide will carry his/her own personal gear, including tent (guide carries a Duluth Pack)

The goal for packing is to get all your gear - including canoes - into nine portage loads or pieces. That's one per person -- 3 canoes, 2 food packs, 1 crew gear pack and 3 personal gear packs.
