Stonehenge, Wiltshire.

Although Stonehenge has many lunar, stella and solar alignments, the inner-horseshoe faces the winter solstice sunrise. Today, the Henge is famous for the Druid ceremony and hippy festival held around the Summer Solstice. Indeed, it is 'a place built by the people, for the people'.

English Heritage permit Druids into the inner-circle around the solstices and equinoxes, although, in order to protect the site from damage caused by the ever-increasing numbers of tourists, the Henge itself is fenced off. Today many Druids associate the stones with King Arthur and Merlin, and the spirituality of these masculine characters seem to compliment the energy of the site. The feminine energy of the nearby Avebury stone circle is a natural balance in the region, and pilgrimages to Stonehenge are often proceeded by a visit to Avebury.

The landscape around the Henge is interesting, with many archaeological wonders to inspire the imagination such as the ancient circus and numerous barrows of antiquity. Like the nearby circle of Avebury, the Henge once had an avenue leading to it. The stone circle itself is the third phase of building, the first being a site aligned to the movements of the moon.
