A/FX Replica
Owned by James Marston of Smithfield, Maine.
This 1964 Fairlane started
life like all the rest built by Ford. It was just transportation.
Jim Marston has taken it a giant step back to the A/FX wars of
the sixties.
The engine is the real gem of this recreation. Inside of the 1965 427 cubic inch sideoiler block is a set of forged pistons, a roller cam and the usual cross bolted main caps. On top, and this is where things really start to get interesting, is a pair of tunnel port heads. These heads are left over parts from Ford's GT-40 program and have been reworked by none other than Holman & Moody. They are also aluminum. Then there is the intake manifold. (Click here to view the manifold) It is believed that this one is all there is. Though it carries a Ford stock number and is a factory piece, it is an experimental one. Being of the cross ram design it is a larger type that is similar to the Shelby Cross Ram for the small blocks, with crossed runners and a bath tub type chamber directly under the four 450 cfm Holley four barrel carbs, that are feed by the two superchargers. All those cubic feet of air flow are controlled by progressive linkage.
The "Bath tub" intake on the tunnel port was once used on a drag boat in a past life. I believe that Jim has put it to a much better use on his Thunder Bolt.
Another interesting feature of this car is the Ram air box that feeds the two hungry superchargers, that feed the four even hungrier Holleys. It is a really nice piece too! Fuel mileage? What is fuel mileage? If the four Holleys and two blowers didn't do in what ever fuel mileage a full on 427 might have, the narrowed by 2 inches, 9 inch rear end filled with a spool and 4:56 gears sure won't help much either. Moving up towards the middle of the car is another special part. Jim has chosen a special C-4 transmission, yes a C-4, this is not a miss print. The C-4 has a modified C-6 bell housing which contains a 4,500 rpm converter. A set of Competition Engineering Adjustable ladder bars are used to control the read end movements. The very special Fairlane, has done the factory one better and is no longer, just transportation!
Jim has some more pictures of his new engine with the Powerdyne blowers on it! (Click here) To view the Blower pictures. These should turn this '64 into a real A/FX of the sixties type for sure.
