Superior Kayak (and canoe) Club
Latest Update:

Stay tuned here for new updates on the club activities and on plans for the fall, winter and looking ahead to the 2009 season. 2008, the first season for the club I put together after arriving in town, has been a huge success in my oppinion and I'm excited about continueing our trips for the rest of the season and on into 2009.

I'll be spending several hours this week working on numerous website updates and cleaning up the Facebook site as well. Seeing that not all our members are using Facebook, I'll use this website more and more for putting out club news.

For this weeks Thursday paddle, with shorter daylight hours, we will keep it local and will recommend headlamps or other such lights in the event we are out on the water as dusk approaches.

We have a long weekend coming up soon. If any of you are looking to do some paddling, maybve fire out a group email to the club members and make some suggestiions. That or email me directly and I will pass it on to the club.

After the first spring and summer of operation, the club is going strong and I am very happy with how we have grown so far. Our Thursday night paddles have been a huge success. The Tuesday Night Race Series has been well received and shows huge promise for 2009. I'm now getting ready to start building some fast boats, perfectly suited for the race series as well as the marathon race cene next door in Manitoba where over 1000 people are involved in the marathon canoe racing scene.

For next season, I am looking for a few people to take on a leadership role by volunteering to be contact person/ orgainzer for a few of our trips, whether Thursday Night Paddles or some weekend activities. Our Club Addles this year have had up to 19 paddlers on the water on any given night. We have done 4 Full Moon Paddles. A bit of overnight tripping, some weekend day paddles, some social events and more, For 2009, well all I can say is that " You ain't seen nothing yet"!

There are Membership Forms and Waivers for the club available online through this site. Feel free to print them off and submit them, by mail, in person to myself or you can drop them off at Ostrom Outdoors (one of our club sponsors...10% discount on paddling accessories for Club Members) or mail them to me at the address on the forms. Club membership is $15.00 per individual or $20.00 for a family membership and entitles you to any and all club benefits and an eventual newsletter. Contributers needed for newsletters by the way.

Check back often for further updates.

Thunder Bay Canoe & Kayak Race Series
Welcome to the Superior Kayak & Canoe Club.
On this web page, a section of my personal site, I'll be posting information regarding the new sea kayak club that I started up shortly after moving to Thunder Bay from British Columbia in the Spring of 2008.

You will find Club Membership Forms, Waivers, news, event listings, results, photos and more. Club fees are a paltry $15.00 per person or $20.00 for a family membership, payable by cash or cheque. All cheques to be made out to Joe O'Blenis.
Membership forms can be printed out off of this page or may be picked up at Ostrom Outdoors on Balmoral Street. Fees may also be dropped off at Ostrom Outdoors or mailed to me at the address on the bottom of the membership form.

This will be the third paddling club I have run and the second that I have started. The club is open to all sea kayakers in the region and, on some events, is also fully suitable for canoes. There are no paid services provided by the club, it is rather a social network of area paddlers looking to get on on outtings with other like minded paddlers. All participants assume full responsibiltiy for their own safety and are responsible for having all of their mandatory safety equipment with them on all club paddling activities. The Club assumes no liability over particpants in any events.

The "Race Series" is not an actual "Club Event" but rather is open to everyone and is simply cross promoted within the club. Check back often fur further notices and updates.

The Superior Kayak Club is being actively supported by Ostrom Outdoors and by Wildwaters Paddling Shop.
Ostrom Outdoors is offering a 10% discount to paid up card carrying members of the club. Wildwaters, with their on water location regularly plays host to a number of group paddling activities and the Race Series. These are also the two LOCALLY owned paddling shops in the Thunder Bay area, both having 100% local ownership and are both owned by paddlers with decades of experience in the paddling industry. As club founder, I urge you all to fully support both of these paddling shops by shopping locally and supporting these Thunder Bay owned businesses.
