Car Specifications

Derby cars must meet the following specifications.  Failure to meet the standards shall result in the derby car being disqualified.
     Maximum width 2 3/4 inches
     Maximum length 7 inches
     Maximum height 4 inches
     Maximum weight 5 ounces / 141.75 grams
Maximum width between wheels 1 3/4 inches
Minimum width between car and track 3/8 inch

Only the official Cub Scout Grand Prix Derby car body, axles and wheels may be used.  No other body, axles, or wheels are acceptable.  (Additional kits and parts may be purchased at the Scout Service Center in Pleasant Hill).  All entries must have been constructed in the current scouting year.

Wheel bearings, washers, or bushings are prohibited.  The car shall not ride on springs.  Only dry lubricants may be used on wheels and axles (i.e. powdered graphite or Teflon).  The axle nails must be securely affixed to the car.  The axles may be placed in the original axle grooves or new axle grooves or drilled holes may be used in the original block.  The original axle-to-axle spacing of 4.40 inches (+ or - 1/8 inch) must be maintained.  Details such as steering wheel, driver, are permitted as long as these items do not exceed the specifications listed above.

Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements.  Weight is considered to be any material on the car that is not provided in the original kit.  All weight must be securely attached to the car with glue, nails, or screws.  Weights shall be passive (i.e., non-moveable, non-magnetic, non-electric).

Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass nor in reducing the wheel width or diameter of the original kit wheels.  Some of the original "tread marks" on the wheel face must remain intact (i.e. apparent to the inspector).  Wheels may not be machined or sanded to a beveled condition and the portion of the wheel surface that contacts the track must remain parallel to the axle.

Official Weigh-in and Inspection

All participants must submit their Pinewood Derby cars for official weigh-in and inspection.  If the participant cannot personally bring his car to the weigh-in, the participant may arrange for someone else to bring the car to the weigh-in.

If a car fails to meet the listed specifications, the owner will be informed of the reason(s) and he may make any necessary adjustments during the hours of the weigh-in.  Once the car passes inspection and has been weighed-in, the car will be impounded and no further adjustments are allowed, unless the car is somehow damaged.  The Pinewood Derby racetrack will be set up during the weigh-in so that racers may test their cars.

Awards

All participants will receive a race day participation award.

Awards will be given to the Pack's top finishers as well as each Den winner and runner-up.  Design awards will also be given to the cars that are voted the best in the following categories: Most Realistic, Most Artistic, Most Creative, Most Futuristic, Most Extravagant, and Judge's Choice.
