SUNSHINE SKYWAY BRIDGE

PRE - CUTTING AND LOADING

ALL OF THESE THUMBNAILS ARE LINKS TO A FULL SIZE IMAGE

Material basket full of "shape-charges" used to cut the superstructure.

Close up of the charges, you can see the V-shape that produces the cutting jet to "shear" the steel.

Each member was cut on top and bottom , leaving only the sides for support.

The charges are used in pairs "inside/outside" and are banded together with big rubber bands.

A look at a "box-beam" showing the pairs of charges on each side.

A close look at the cantilever superstructure prior to demolition.

Looking up into the cantilever from the roadway while loading the charges, you can see how all unnecessary bracing has been removed.

Shape-charges above the knuckle on the diagonal beam and on the horizontal , you can see the new bridge piers and dolphins.
