Chapter 23
(Christie’s View)
I giggled as snoring filled the car. Howie had fallen asleep & could he snore. I turned on the radio to get my mind off of the sound. I looked in the rearview mirror. Kara was fast asleep with the puppies curled up next to her. I turned my eyes back on the road. I decided to stop at a rest stop. I gently woke Kara & asked her if she needed to go to the bathroom. We went to the bathroom & then I gave the puppies a chance to run around & play. When I got back to the car, I saw that Howie was awake. Kara was fast asleep with her head on his stomach. I smiled at Howie & he smiled back. I put the puppies in the back seat & climbed into the car. I noticed that we were low on fuel so I stopped at a gas station. When I got back into the car I noticed that Kara had been put into the back seat.

“Christie, I was wondering if we could stop in the next town so we can go to the store,” he asked.
“OK,” I said.

Howie quickly made a list. We stopped at a Walmart & Howie ran in. He bought 2 cooler, a clothing basket, ice, sodas, water, bread, different kinds of meat, mustard, mayonnaise, plastic bowels, cups, silverware, napkins, dog food, paper towels, cereal, fruit, an atlas, paper, pencils, pens, toilet paper, pillows, blankets, 3 suitcases, & more towels.

“What’s all this for,” I asked, dying of curiosity.
“We can’t be making all of these stops if we are going to run from these people. I figure we can get a hotel room tonight & make some sort of plan,” he said, “The more stops we make the easier they find us & Kara. I can’t allow her to get hurt.
“So, Mr. Dorough what do you propose we do?”
