PERRY COUNTY 2004
Despite the best efforts by the locals to stamp out anything that might be remotely cool, there is actually one place in Perry County that is worth seeing.  That is the Little Buffalo State Park which is located approximately four miles south of Newport.  There's Holman Lake which includes a dam, a boating dock, and a fishing pier.  There is even a small swimming pool by the campground area.  For those who enjoy hiking, Little Buffalo State Park has several hiking trails.  There is also a covered bridge, Clay's Bridge, and an outdoor amphitheater .  During the wintertime the park hosts "Christmas Walk" when several trails are lined with thousands of Christmas lights.  There's even ice fishing during the winter.  Yep, lots of cool outdoor stuff at Little Buffalo State Park.

Only you can prevent forest fires.  No, seriously.  I really do meant it.  You CAN prevent forest fires.  Why are you laughing at me?  What's so darn funny?  Knock it off!

The coolest part about Little Buffalo State Park though is Shoaff's Mill, a fully operational grist mill from the late 18th century.  We were lucky enough to be there on Saturday afternoon as the mill is only open for tours for three hours during the week.  The mill was primarily used to ground the grain from local Perry County farms.  Several challenges arose though with the milling process.  To quote from the brochure...

Long ago, this mill ground wheat flours as well as cornmeal.  Grinding wheat flour was much more complicated than making cornmeal and required several additional steps.  These steps included: (1) hoisting the wheat to the attic for cleaning, (2)  elevating the grain back to the attic for cooling after it was ground, and (3) sifting the ground wheat to seperate the flour, middlings, and bran.
