In honor of Velvet Paws and all the homeless,
forgotten, abandoned, abused animals.
For the nameless furchildren who gave their lives for others,
for research and as a result of humankind's inhumanity.
May the Higher Powers that be forgive the cruelty.
We light this candle for them.
As our lights shine brightly through the galaxy, may the angels smile upon us,
and know that for a brief moment, we have put aside worldly differences to bond as ONE.
I have sent you on a journey to a land free from pain, not because I did not love you,
but because I loved you too much to force you to stay.
I Saw an Angel

I saw an angel today, oh what a vision to see.
This beautiful angel sent only to me.
My eyes filled with tears at this glorious sight,
This angel so lovely made my heart feel so light.

I held an angel today, in my hands it did rest
Surely it had to be one of God's best.
So soft, so tender, so fragile it seemed
To hold such an angel was more than I dreamed.

I kissed an angel today, I just couldn't resist
As I looked at this sweetie I felt so much bliss
My heart over poured with a feeling of love
For this sweet little creature sent from Heaven above.

I lost an angel today; I guess God had other plans
This precious little life slipped right through my hands
My heart felt so empty as tears fell from my eyes
I didn't have the chance to say my good byes.

I saw an angel today, one I'll never forget
Those short precious moments I'll never regret
He took something with him on his journey above
A piece of my heart to remember my love.

A Taker-in of Stray Cats

God sends some of us a special mission
To take in stray kitty-cats in any condition,
To feed them and give them a
permanent home,
To love them and make
them our very own.

They chase through the house;
their potty box smells;
They seem to have secrets they're
unwilling to tell.
They play till exhausted,
then curl in your lap,
And settle themselves for a long comfy nap.

Some people are called to great
wealth and power,
To run corporations and make
big bucks per hour.
But others of us are only asked,
To take in little stray kitty-cats.

I asked God for things of importance to do,
Other than loving a good man and
a bunch of kitties too.
He said, Don't be self-righteous;
learn from your mistakes,
And be glad I send kitty-cats and not
My stray snakes.

I dreamed when I died I heard St. Peter say,
What important things did you do each day?
I felt Heaven for me was an impossibility
And that I should have lived my life
much differently.

Then God said,
Come in and have food and some drink,
And sit here in Heaven by your little cat Tink;
For I gave you one of My most important tasks
When I asked you to be
A taker-in of stray cats.

~ A Happy Ending ~

She bore them all alone
No loving pats to ease her pain,
No cozy house to shield her
From the wind and driving rain

No bowls of milk to give her
Nourishment to feed
Six hungry little kittens
Who clung to her in need

She knew she had to find a way
To keep her babies alive
She needed help from somewhere
If they were to survive

So when the night was over
And the sun rose in the sky
One by one she took them
To a house that stood nearby

Instinct must have guided her
To choose a refuge where
There lived a lonely widow
With room enough to spare

One without a child
To brighten up her days
One who wouldn't turn away
Poor homeless little strays

The mother sat and waited
Till the door was open wide
And she and all six kittens
Were allowed to come inside

And that's just where they are today
A happy feline crew
Purring with contentment
But full of mischief too!

And she who took them in
And gave them tender loving care
Has found her home a brighter place
Because they're living there!

~ Little Paws Prayer ~

This is a prayer for little paws
All up and down the land,
Driven away, no friendly voice
Never an outstretched hand.
For weary paws of little beasts
Torn and stained with red,
And never a home and never a rest,
Till little beasts are dead.
Oh God of homeless things look down
And try to ease the way
Of all the little weary paws
That walk the world today.

~ Just A Pet ~

I met some insensitive people today,
They did not understand that my baby had passed away.
That my baby had four legs, this is true,
But my baby was every bit a person
Just like me or you.

They could not comprehend the joy my baby gave,
Or the sorrow I felt when my baby passed away.
They only saw my tears,
as I thought of the precious years
They rebuffed my feelings with insults and jeers.

It hurt my soul to see such people laugh or scold,
I thought to myself,
what happens when THEY get old?
Will they be mourned in the hour of their passing,
Do they really understand love that is everlasting?

I pity these people who show so little concern,
What a valuable lesson they could have learned.
To have someone who loves them for who they are,
And pass no judgements, living Life's journey,
not matter how far.

I look into my baby's eyes and see love earned,
And total devotion a hundrefold returned.
Rest easy my baby, it won't be long,
When we're both together
and singing a heavenly song.

Poem for Cats

And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.

Are you coming then? asked God
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.

But don't they understand, asked God,
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined for all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is...forever and ever and ever.

Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am...forever and ever and ever.

Significance of Mother's Day 2002

my story is short
my story is sad
my name is velvet paws
three weeks i had on this earth
my feline mom ran out of milk
and a human mom took over
for two weeks she pampered me
and did all my feline mom could not
with homemade formula
and clean cotton guaze
and two days before i left earth
i ate like a pig, used the litter box
and then fell ill.
on a sunday afternoon(mother's day)
i took my leave flying to the bridge
leaving behind a devestated mom
and my sister peanut
for four years i have played at the bridge
and seen many babies come way too soon
leaving behind sad moms and dads
but i have also seen many others
greet their earthly parents
learn from my life
all u days are numbered
my number was 21
