At the
Greenhouse Chapter 3 Continuing
on down the path which meandered through an area that could easily be
mistaken for part of a botanical garden, he suddenly heard young voices.
Listening close, he heard Christa’s voice, Patrick stopped to listen,
noticing that he was now positioned outside the greenhouse. Though
empty and unused, this frosted glass building still had electricity. Soon,
they would turn on the lights, right? Patrick entertained the thought that it
might be anyone from the party, but he didn't really believe that. Intending to
enter if they remained in darkness, he sighed with relief when a light
suddenly came on. Christa’s
soft, playful laughter, and Eric's newly deepened voice rumbled out of the
structure. Patrick's relief was short-lived, however. As their silhouettes
appeared on the wall closest to him, Patrick stood immobile and watched in
dismay as Eric’s shadow stretched itself across one of the long benches by
the near wall, clearly beckoning Christa to join him. Patrick's
thoughts came fast and random, but in spite of his turmoil, he realized that
he was officially eavesdropping now. Still he didn't tear himself away. The
silhouetted shapes came together, with Christa’s body leaning over Eric. The
reclining teenager seemed to reach up to take Christa by the arms and then
her face came down as Patrick tried not to notice a shared kiss. While
Patrick might have been upset and sickened at the sight of any two members of
his church engaging in such activity this young, Patrick felt as if he had
been dealt a physical blow. Christa was not just any girl, and just now, he
felt something new growing within him. A sense of panic and white hot rage
seized him. What was she doing! He
wanted to cry out, but he forced himself to speak quietly in order to avoid alerting
the others to this potentially embarrassing scene. "Christa, are you in
there? Your parents are calling for you." Both silhouettes jumped as if
they'd been stung by bees, and came instantly apart. Eric
appeared first, holding onto Christa's hand. They both looked away as they
headed back toward the house. Patrick wondered for a moment what to do, and
then he realized he would have to talk with her about it, and soon. |
