The Garden
Path Chapter 2 Patrick
decided to follow the young man, since other adults were inside to keep
order. He was especially concerned about those two because Eric had once
confided to Patrick that he found it difficult to control his growing needs,
as he called them. Patrick
chose to leave by way of the side entrance because he thought it best that he
not reveal his spying to them unless it became necessary. However, when he
got out into the back yard, he wished he had been faster. Patrick couldn't
see any trace of them, and for a moment, he panicked. Night
had fallen, and the path that led deeper into the park-like yard was dark
except for a yellow light ahead. He continued along a winding path toward a
glow, expecting to see Christa and Eric at any minute. Instead, he met a
couple of men from church who were standing around a hot barbecue. Nodding to
them, he continued on. In
certain spots, the stone walkway in this particular area was illuminated by
electric lanterns suspended on cast iron poles. In one of these corners,
bathed in a swirl of light from an outdoor lamp, he came upon a newlywed
couple at a fifties-style red vinyl diner booth that served as an innovative
patio table. He smiled and offered them a few words of greeting, but his mind
wasn't on the small talk they exchanged. As
he continued his walk, that booth stayed in his mind. Earlier that evening,
Patrick had watched as Christa and a couple of the teenage girls from church
talked and joked as they sat on those bench seats and elbowed each other
between shared giggles. He had been worried about those conversations,
somehow knowing that something about their demeanor seemed insincere.
Switching back to the present, Patrick found himself in a new part of the
yard. In
his mind’s eye, Patrick tried not to imagine the sort of situation Christa
might now be facing. Yet, deep inside, he was sure that Christa was about to
be dragged into something dangerous to her soul, and to her purity. Patrick’s
only hope was to find them in time. |
