In 1969, while working in the Gary, Indiana, public school system, Elmer first laid his eyes on Sadie. He knew that she was "the one.". Elmer was a custodian and Sadie was a cook. Both were employees at Lincoln Elementary School. According to my "Uncle Bud" (as I affectionately call him) they have been "huffin and puffin" ever since.
Elmer moved on to Ernie Pyle Elementary School as 2nd in-charge of engineering. Eventually, he was promoted to Head Engineer at Roosevelt High School and remained there until he retired in 1998.
In 1980, Sadie left Lincoln for a promotion as Administrator of Food Services at Tolleston School. In June of 2003, she will also celebrate her retirement from a long, rewarding, and dedicated career.
My uncle and aunt have been devoted to each other for 31 years. They currently reside in Chesterton, Indiana with their precious dog "Kiwi."
When I asked what song brings back the memories of their dating, courtship and life together, Elmer said "Betcha By Golly Wow" by the Stylistics.
