| George & Alice Pollard |
| My Uncle George and Aunt Alice met each other in 1965. George attended Tolleston High School in the city of Gary, Indiana, and Alice Brooks attended Obanon High School in the city of Sikeston, Missouri. He worked at the local ice cream parlor which was the ultimate "hang-out" for the teens at that time. He also was the lead singer of a singing group named "The Darrows." They competed in local talent competitions against other singing groups -- including The Jackson Five. He graduated from high school later that year and married Alice shortly thereafter. George found out quickly, after working at Inland Steel for 6 days and Youngstown Sheet and Tube for 3 months, that the steel industry definitely was not on his agenda for future plans. He changed career direction and found his calling working in food safety and sanitation management. Over the next 33 years, he worked for Wonder Bread/Hostess Cake, Kroger Baking, and Frito-Lay. Alice worked in banking and real estate. During this period of time, they resided in the cities of Elk Grove Village and Hanover Park, Illinois; Atlanta, Georgia; Indianapolis, Indiana; Plano, Texas; and Columbia, Tennessee. An injury in 1990 sidelined my uncle, and as a result, he retired. He and Alice are the proud parents of Felicia and Anthony Duane, currently reside in Columbia, and have been blessed with four beautiful and healthy grandchildren ~ Jermaine Andre (16), Marshall Leland (10), Anthony Duane, Jr. (3), and Morghan McKenzie (1). On June 29, 2003, they celebrated 38 years of marriage. |
